Promised Pics of A.J Stamm & H-I bamboo rods. Value unknown

As promised I have taken photos of the A.J. Stamm and Horrocks & Ibbotosn rods that belong to a friend of mine. I contacted Golden Witch to inquire about A.J. Stamm. They think that this was a custom rod maker as they could not find any info on them. I gave them a detailed description of the rods and they told me this sounds like the rods were custom made. OK, lets get at these rods. I need you folks to help me determine the monetary value of these rods. One thing to note is that all of these rods have staggered nodes.

The rods were refinished by my friends’ grandfather and are not without flaws. I will list the flaws as we go along.

First we have an A.J. Stamm 8’, 3/1 1tip, Line#-7 with brown and black jasper wraps. all of the hardware is original. The tip has a slight set to the left, probably won’t affect casting, and the female ferrule on the center piece is cracked. Ferrules may be nickle silver but I can’t tell for certain. The rod is honey colored. All sections are equal in length.

Next is an A.J. Stamm 9’, 3/2 2tip, Efecto, Line #6-7. All hardware is original, ferrules appear to be brass but are pinned and in very good shape. Both tips have a set. One has a slight “fishing” set that should not affect casting or fishing. The other tip has a more severe set and should probably be straightened. Both tips have beautiful red agate inserts. One insert has a slight chip out of it. The wraps on this rod are beautiful blue, gold, yellow, red and green. All sections are equal in length.

Next is a beautiful A.J. Stamm bait rod. a 9’, 3/1 1tip, “Coho, Calcutta”. Beautiful carved wood black grip, down locking seat and those same beautiful blue, gold, yellow, red and green wraps. All hardware is original and the tip has a red agate insert. The frame on the tip has a small opening in the ring that can be easily soldered. Can be fished as is.

Here is a Horrocks & Ibbotson, “Governor”, 9’, 3/2 2tip, with original hardware. The stripping guide is loose and has a small chip in the red agate. A simple re-wrap of the guide and a little work with the dremel tool should fix this or just replace the guide. The butt section ferrule has a small crack but it is very tight. All sections are of equal length and straight as an arrow. No set to any of them. I personally like this rod but I am a sucker for these old mass produced rods.

Next is another bait rod. 9’, 3/2 2tip. Unknown manufacturer. Ferrules are OK but most of the guides are missing. Both tips straight but one tip is badly split. Beginning to de-laminate. Probably just a wall hanger for display.

If you folks can help me figure out what these rods are worth I would be very, very grateful!

Nighthawk
I am not an expert on cane rods but love to fish them… I head with these pics over to this fhttp://p205.ezboard.com/bclarksclassicflyrodforumorum.
These guys will help you out. They are great guys and they have a world of knowledge.
Good luck.
Bill from PA

Bill,
Nice to hear from you again. I am finding it hard to believe that there isn’t anyone on this board that wants to even guess at the value of these rods. Perhaps I should have posted this in the rod building forum here.

OK just my two cents here. The H-I govener 9 ft is according to fishing banjo’s site worth about $200.00. On ebay you can purchase them all day long for anywhere from $50.00- 75.00 plus shipping. I have never seen or heard of the other rods. I like you love the H-I"s. I have one and am watching for another when the price is right. I have the beaverkill 8 1/2 ft and it is all original with no set. Paid $52.00 total for it on ebay. Hope this helps

I have seen them there too. I think fishing banjo is referring to a rod, governor, that is all original and in very good to excellent condition. I think I am going to tell her not to take less than $125 for the governor. I have seen the ones on eBay and believe this one to be in much better condition than almost all of them. I see this on eBay all of the time, “vintage bamboo fly rod, very good condition, ready to fish” and then you find out that the ferrules are junk, eyes are missing, wraps are loose, varnish all but gone and sets are so bad they should read “warning, blind turn ahead”. I do buy rods off of eBay but I ask very detailed, pointed questions. If the seller cannot answer them or will not accept returns on the rod I will not buy from them.

As for the Stamm rods I am betting they will fetch upwards of $150 each easily. This is what I got from the great folks at Golden Witch:

Dear Eric,

Thank you for your note. I do not know anything about that maker. In fact I googled the name and found what I assume are your posts requesting info. I would imagine that they are more custom than mass production because of the lack of information but that is just a guess. They are probably not of huge value but if they are still structurally sound they would probably be great project rods. When you put an offer in on them just be sure to keep in mind how much you will likely spend on components and figure that into what your total budget for the rods. Please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week!

I am sincere when I say they are great folks at Golden Witch!

Eric I like you am very carefull when I buy on ebay. Wish I had the money for the H-I I would snap it up in a heart beat that is a good price the rod appears to be in reasonable shape.

If I owned that rod you would have it right now. I will keep you in mind should I get the Governor from her.

She seems to think that her grandfather may have sent the rods to A.J. Stamm for a refinish. Something was brought to my attention on another board. Take another look at the ferrules and reel seats. Step down ferrules and down locking reel seats, could these be higher end Montague rods? Is it possible that they were custom made by Montague, thus the higher quality boo and staggered nodes?

I sent Golden Witch a link to this page so they could view the photos. They think these rods will be great project rods.
