Well the second Redington ad in Fly Fish America has hit the streets with the new April 2005 issue.
Firstly, I called Redington and was told “no Comment” What is the boards comment?
Their first ad was a full page ad with Fidel Castro’s image and some weak humor connecting his prowes as a leader to the attributes of a Redington rod.
This new ad is a mug shot-full page-Of Gorbie and says comrades around the world can fish redington.
I really fail to see the humour in these ads. I wonder who will be featured next? Not too many bad guys left that won’t get the Homeland Security Office ruffled.
I think Hardy and Angel will sell more rods than Redington and the Commies.
Well Redington is a ‘Left Coast’ Company, so it should come as no surprise. But this is America…Anyway, I agree, if you find their ad offensive, let them know and don’t buy their product.
Maybe they have realized an untapped market in communist fly fishers. Fidel can’t live forever, so maybe Redington is positioning themselves for a share of the fly rod market in Cuba once Fidel is gone. G
fm2,
Sorry to hear you were offended by it. I personally think it is nice to be able to laugh at oneself.
Haven’t seen the Gorbie one but thought the Fidel and Maggie ones were cute. I see it as humor poking fun at stereotypes of world leaders.
If homeland security doesn’t like it… it is none of their business. The add does not promote terrorism or threaten national security. Homeland securit are terrorism police, not thought police.
I’ve written them two or three times about a rusting problem with the spool release lever on their RS2 reels. Talked to a rep of their’s at the fly fishing expo, too. This has been since February, and, to date, no response.

FYI-I did tell Redington on the phone that I thought it was poor ad series.
I think they could have come up with a hundred other ways to be cute. Why glorify commies in full page ads.
What If i don’t like leaders who direct efforts against the US and happen to already own and use Redington gear?
Check the Buy/Sell/Trade ( just kidding )
And what about Dave Redington’s good name being subjected to questionable ethics? I wonder if he is sorry that he ever sold the rights to his family name anyways.
I see the points made. I am not loosing any sleep and am not “hitting the chat rooms” or anything like that beacause of my distaste for this ad series. I have said all that I will say on this topic. Just thought I’d speak my mind. There. Done. Finito.
I to do not understand the adds today? It must be the in your face type of TV we have now? The Fly Shop in Redding California has an add in a mag that I do not think is all that great. We always have to remember that children read these magazines and these web-sites. It is an add for there travel. There is a picture of a run down place on an island and on a boat in the picture pulled out of the water it say’s in real plan english (and was made so you can read it real well if you look at the boats condition) “Stuck Up Sh3t Creek”
Granted it is not that bad if it were just grown ups that read those magazines but kids read them to. I would think there would be an wasy way to say the same thing without making it “Stick” out so well. And yes I e-mailed the Magazine and the Fly Shop. Ron
Your continued hounding (hatred?) of Abel is getting old. What’s the matter…they wouldn’t give you the writer/vendor discount? Your continued trashing of this company is bordering on paranoia. What in the world is up with this, anyway??
There is a picture of Dick Cheney in the 2004 Abel catalog. If you want to talk about fly fishing advertising, that one takes the cake.
I don’t own any Redington stuff and I don’t care if they put Hitler in their next ad.
Micus, weren’t you recently attacking me and others about our expensive reels? I never had to waste any of my time trying to get in touch with my reel manufacturer 1.because my reels don’t rust. 2.Because their customer service is first rate.

Benjo Benjo Benjo…i wasn’t attacking you and others…i am just dismayed at the price of abel reels and expressed that. and my reel of choice is a penn international, which i would hold up to any abel (and it’s half the price). And true, the rs2’s have a problem with the spool release lever; on the other hand i got them new in the box for $40 a peice. And dahema, yes, i’m paranoid about abel…when a company can get customers to buy pliers for $135 or spend an extra $150 to splash paint on a reel, i’m afraid of what else they can do!!! but it’s true i don’t get a discount from them–i’ve never asked, because even at 50% off i think they are overpriced.

Just for the record and of interest to those discussing Abel Reels-I had a horrible experience with Abel one time. I got a reel that had 11-count them eleven flaws on/in it. Then their bean counter wanted me to pay to fix it and ship it too. I nearly got run off another board for daring to say that Abel was not “Perfect” in every way.
I did finally get a great reel out the Abel after 7 or 8 calls, e mails and a moth’s wait…and it was like trying to pull carp’s teeth…
I spoke to Steve himself at a show this year and did not bring it up with him. He was showing me one of his splash coated vises. MAn was it cool. Even though I am a vise junkie-I can not afford an Abel Vise with the Splash design. It is a neat tool though and had some featrure that Steve showed me that were not apparent in reviewing the literature, nor by simply operating it.
<<<<<< uses cheap reels that are ABEL to get the job done… without the statutory eleven defects per reel!!
Greys of Alnwick( Hardys) GRX series takes some beating for VFM!
No offense, but have you ever seen an Abel reel manufactured, or even seen one up close? I’d say the price justifies the work that goes into them.
Abel mkes BY FAR some of the FINEST equipment in the industry. I have a few and am PROUD to own them. They manufacture EVERYTHING on the reel, from the drag to the tiny little screws that hold the pawls in place, and make sure every little piece of the reel is polished when it should be.
Someone has to do all this, and the emplyees at Abel do a damned fine job at making sure that everything comes out of that factory and into the consumers hands looking and working 100% perfect.
And besides… if you rinsed off your reels after using them in the salt, they wouldn’t rust…

Thanx J. Been busy working on a new company that MAY just be advertising with you guys. Will be discussing this in the future. =) Oh yeah. Been fishing too.
Here is something to think about with your new company.
You can sell 10 reels at $ 50.00 profit, or 2 reels at $ 250.00 profit. When all is done the money left over is still the same.
Actually, I may need to modify that a bit. If you sell 10 reels for the one guy you will be a hero, if you sell 2 for the other guy you will be a former dealer.
Just because it costs alot it doesn’t mean it’s better, it just means it’s more expensive. You’ll have to work hard to keep finding dummies that want to pay too much and receive too little. There is a whole world out there to mine for sales, don’t restrict yourself to the gullible, they soon find new fads.
Just so you know, I’ve got 60 year old Pflueger’s that still work.
I can’t see getting all worked up about ads… they are 90% b.s. anyway. I took the Redington ad as a tongue in cheek poke at their own name "Red"ington. Big Deal!!! Turn the page, maybe that one will have something important on it. I don’t think anyones trying to convert anyone or that this will be the end of democracy- if it is…we have big problems… I think people who sell products, might actually be capitalists. I think they expected the average demographic that reads the mags as able to figure out the joke. Perhaps they overestimate the readership. P.S. Just because you’re paranoid; doesn’t mean people don’t talk about 'ya…
