Prince Edward Island

I’m going to Prince Edward Island the first week of August, family vacation. Have hooked up with a local guide, Harold Bagnall, for a one-day wade on the Dunk River, targeting Brookies. Anyone with suggestions on flys to take (I’m a rookie tyer) or other locations to fish, including salt, would be appreciated. Thanks

I have had good luck fishing for
brookies with real “rough and fuzzy”
looking flies. They also seem to like
the color orange. An orange bead on
your nymphs seems to work well.

Just my opinion from my own
experience.

Jeff,

Going for big brookies, … don’t be affraid to use BIG flies. We tye oversized muddlers with a big busshy head and retrieve it like a popper. (looks more like a mouse than a muddler).

#6-8 conventional muddlers dead drifted on the surface too.

If they are brookies of the sea run variety, big bushy woolies:

Orange, black, white, brown and olive.

Big bushy dries dead drifted or skated:

p.s. … I believe the Dunk has Salmon. Check with Harold. Ask about the regs, … it is probable that you can’t use lead, bead, shot etc. So clean out your fly box ahead of time, … just in case.

Hey Chris,

They look “rough and fuzzy”
to me.

Some good choices.
I think I will tie some up
and add to my “go to’s” fo brookies.

i fish the dunk almost daily, and it has alot of fish, not only brokies, but rainbows as well, caught my first rainbow there a few weeks ago, 22". its a tidal river, and has a few salt run trout, and also salmon.
the mackeral run starts in august also, and one of the best spots is in borden, just when you come off of the bridge javascript:PopupPic(‘images/en/bridgepe2.jpg’) (hope that link works) you can see the pier from the bridge.
anyways, i only live about 10 mins from the dunk, and within an hour and a half from the morell, and all spots in between.
if youve got more than one day to fish, ill give you contact info, and we can get out fishing.

Mike

btw, most of the fish ive caught this year have been on a #10 hellgramite pattern

MW,

Rough and Fuzzy, … YUP !!

I’m not a real “finess” FF’er. I also fish almost exclusively for sea run trout and Atlantics, … so matching the hatch isn’t in my vocabulary any more (being that Salmo salar and their sea run brooky cousins don’t eat in fresh water).

I like tactics one could describe as Stimulator, Bombing, skate 'n skitter for dries, as well as a Light Speed wooly retreive.

LF mentionned a two handed retrieve for 'Cudas and I’m going to try that this fall.

Thanks to all for the info, I would have never taken the “big and ugly” stuff, I was only thinking small stream midges, etc. That’s what makes this site the best source of good ff info, all the “experts” out there! Mike K. give me a contact number, we’re staying on Point Prim. I think Friday, August 5 is an “open” day on the vacation schedule. Thanks again.

Jeff,

I came from a “tiny” flies region (Kamloops). I would NEVER have learned about big flies either.

Came from here: [url=http://flyanglersonline.com/features/canada/can305.html:d91a9]http://flyanglersonline.com/features/canada/can305.html[/url:d91a9]
(as I believe FAOL didn’t even exist back then

For me gold is a very good color for brookies. I tie a clouser using white, burnt orange, black bucktail with gold flashabou. They really seem to like it around my neck of the woods.

Some day I’ll get a camera and try using pictures.
