Possible World Record Sea Trout

In by email:

Hello!

My name is Ken-G?ran Pedersen from Norway I’m a gillie in Lakselva, Norway.
Monday I caught a fish that probably is a new world record for seatrout. The
fish was 19,85 kg (44 lbs). I cught it on a 4/5 single handed,
0.25mm/1X/11lbs leader and a double hook nr 12 fly, it took me 2h 30min to
land the fish. I have pictures and video of the hole event, the pictures are
of good quality, 7,2 megapixel.

Her are some links to norwegian newspapers that have publised the story and
pictures: [url=http://pub.tv2.no/nettavisen/friluftsliv/article437945.ece:30b91]http://pub.tv2.no/nettavisen/friluftsliv/article437945.ece[/url:30b91]

Wonderful catch, congratulations!

Do I read that right? He caught that on a 5 wt. rod?

He must have the patience of a rock.

if you wanna catch something ya gotta get a hook in the water

Here are the current world records:
Official World Records:

Atlantic 79.2 pounds 1928
Coho 33.4 pounds Sept 27, 1989
Chum 35 pounds July 11, 1995
Chinook 97.4 pounds May 17, 1985
Pink 13.1 pounds Sept 23, 1992
Sockeye 15.3 pounds Aug 9, 1987

I tried to look at the IGFA records but you have to be a member to do that on their web page. There might be some hole in the record book that this might fill.

Great Catch!!

By “seatrout” he means Atlantic Salmon right? That’s what it looks like to me but is it a sea run brown? Holy $*#T if it is!

If it is a sea run brown and after a closer look I think it is, the all tackle world record is 40 lbs. 4 oz, so it would be a new record.

must have had about 700 yards of backing.

Dear gardenfish,

…or a fast boat!

Heck of a fish. I saw on another site that they are doing genetic tests to see if the fish is in fact a sea run brown trout.

Here’s hoping it is a brown!

Regards,
Tim Murphy

Tim, a fast boat AND 700 yards of backing! Whatever outfit he used, there are some mighty advertising possiblities there.

Yes, in Norway and other artic climes, sea run browns are called sea trout. I don’t know the records, but that sucker has got to be close. A 5 WEIGHT??? Man!

That is almost DEFINITELY a sea-run brown. The biggest I’ve seen are the bunker-busters from Patagonia…but that thing is enormous. Way to go!

And how about a #12 hook ?! . . .getting that small hardware into the tough mouth of a 44 pounder (and getting it to stay!) is no easy task.

I’ve seen and heard good things about fishing in Norway. I have some well-heeled frineds who have been to NZ, Kamchatka, and about every other place you can think of, bbut they complained that they would not bite down hard enough go to Norway. They told me it was about $10k a weeek, and that was before the dollar’s slide.

Something like this might change peoples’ minds.

This guy is a Gillie… or game keeper for some else who is well heeled. I bet the landowner is not pleased. That could have been his fish.

Congratulations! My what a trophy catch that is! It is nice to see the odd angler finally hooking up with a real trophy and I suppose this is a prime example of what patience is all about. After a 2 1/2 hour battle with that fish, I wonder if it was given the opportunity of safe release or not. I saw no mention of that, but if that fellow is a game keeper, I hope he did.
