Possible record bucketmouth

Now I’m not usually prone to put up any old link, and I wish I could just put the picture here but WOW. This would be fun on the fly! Sadly I doubt this fish will live another summer after this.

It is believed that this fish was previously caught at 20 and later 21 lbs.

Lake Dixon is one of my home waters. Dennis Ditmars caught at least 2 of his class tippet LMB records from that lake. My best from there is 8lbs.

The guy that caught that fish, along with the guys that were with him put a lot of time in and are known locally as big bass fisherman.

There are a lot of big bass in San Diego area lakes, an added benefit of the heavy winter and spring time trout stocking programs that create a wonderful fishing opportunity for many youngsters and oldsters.

I read the attached article. Am I the only one that was disturbed by a foul hooked fish pursued for two days on it’s spawning bed? I’ll kill and eat fish so it’s not a moral judgement it’s more from the fact that it just doesn’t seem to sporting.

“Illegitimus nil Carborundum”

Just glad to see that so far they’ve done the right thing…as It sure does not sound as though it should hold a spot in the books without the RIGHT proof…
If I ever caught any fish that could hold a spot on the record…you can bet no one would ever know it!!!

Lake Dixon will suffer greatly for the wide spread knowledge of this possible record fish… and for those type reasons alone I’d never divulge a water I frequent as holding any such fish…respect for the fishery…just my very humble Opinion…

Dixon will be ok. It is already long known as a producer of giant bass with two previous catches >20lbs and many in the 15 - 20 lb range. Two fly class tippet records have come from there also.

It is a small lake and the amount of pressure that can be exerted is somewhat self limiting. No private boats are allowed, no tubing, or wading. It is a resevoir in a canyon and the number of big bass hangouts that can be effectively fished from shore is fairly small.

I’m glad of that…If for no other reason than the sake of the lake…
nope never fished it…
prolly never will lay eyes on it…but I know what a little publicity can do for a body of water…or flow of it…
It’s not always the case that things are in the fisheries favor…

There is a certian stream in this part of the state ¶ that I’d love to see the whole of be a catch and release water…
Not sure what effects this would have on it’s annual fishing pressure…but with the annual fish kill it recieves from poor handleing of the fish caught…
would prolly balance things out without a need for stocking hatchery fish…
I’ve been watching this stream slip a lil farther with each passing season…
Although you’ll never hear of it from the PFBC…
They’d lose that almighty never ending flow of outta state dollars.

Oh…This is just a humble fisherman’s thought’s…been on every square inch of this stream possible many times in my 35 years…but I still could be wrong…and we have not had the best conditions the last several years…Far from Ideal.

Bill, RW here,

The San Diego Lakes are known nationally and have received as much press about their big bass in the last 30 years as any lake or river system in the country. Saying these lakes shouldn’t receive publicity or they will be exploited is like saying Disney World is a secret recreational playground and shouldn’t be publicized as much as it is or everybody will find it.
I’m not trying to be a smart a$$ here, but, like, Dude!!!, “everybody” knows about the big bass in San Diego…except you, I guess.

Later, RW

I think its a great story and that this gentleman is owed our thanks. He has perhaps single-handedly helped to dispell the “Bubba” myth of bass fishing. Well done. Alec
