Porcupine SBS

Peacock-bodied variation on a Burdock salmon fly. Not sure if that’s the official name (found a blurry pic on an interweb search); looked cool, decided to tie it downsized for trout. Swapped out the deer-hair tail for moose body for a little more durability.

hook - TMC 5212 #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tag - Uni-stretch lime green
tail - moose body
rib - x-small wire gold
abdomen - peacock herl
hackle - brown (undersize by 1)
wing - deer hair

Part 1

Mash down barb, start thread about 1 eye width back from front and wrap back to point

tie in Uni-stretch but leave the tag long; wrap to barb and back, tie off and trim

pull tag end forward; tie off and trim

move thread back to tie-in; clean, stack, measure (shank) a clump of deer hair

tie in with 2 soft loops, pull tight and add a few more wraps

pull a few wing fibers back and take a wrap through (pull down and back); repeat

Part 2

trim butts at an angle and cover with thread wraps

clean stack and measure (gap width past the bend) a clump of moose; tie in, trim at junction with wing butt, smooth with thread and tie in rib

tie in peacock, wrap thread forward and set wing angle with thread dam

wrap peacock forward to base of wing; trim, then tie in hackle in front of wing

take a few wraps of hackle in front of the wing, then wrap back to tail; trap tip with wire, spiral rib forward through hackle, helicopter end, tie off and trim hackle tip

half hitch x 2, SHHAN
