Sometimes in my enthusiasm for things I bite off more than I can chew. Just ask my wife! Deciding to tie a deer hair popper for this swap turned out to be one of those times. Even weeks of trying, and tying, watching videos of Dave Whitlock and others getting help, and material from Chris Helm, and working with one of his DVDs, I still am not able to consistently tie flies that are in my opinion good enough for swapping. I have plenty of fishable ones, in fact more than I will use for a couple years. I just won’t mind too much when they are lost.
The frustration with this technique, and pressure to get the flies done was starting to turn an enjoyable hobby into a chore. That is when I decided it was time to drop back and punt. Enter Ward Bean’s [url=http://www.warmwaterflytyer.com/patterns2.asp?page=5:1e94f]HairyMara Slider[/url:1e94f]. This fly qualifies as a top water LMB fly, looks cool, and the bullet head technique, rubber legs, and google eyes were all new to me, so I learned a few things as well. I apologize to all the swappers, for not following through on my original choice, and look forward to seeing everyone’s flies. John, the sliders are going in the mail Wednesday P.M.
Cheers,
Dean
