Kind of a cross between a side-wheel steamer and Princess Leia. The Iris Caddis wing pad is doubled and turned on it’s side(s); color is probably not a match to the natural, but it’s to provide visibility as much as anything. Tied here as a Drake Mackerel (hecuba); change colors to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 320 #12
thread - UTC 70 tan
shuck - Congo Hair brown
rib - Congo Hair brown (twisted)
abdomen - dubbing tan
wing pads - Congo Hair cream
legs - hungarian partridge
thorax - dubbing tan

Part 1

Mash down barb, start thread, tie in shuck and wrap back to bend; trim (gap width)

tie in another sparse hank of CH and wrap back to bend

dub thread, dub body (start with a wrap behind the ribbing) up to 75% mark

twist CH tightly and rib body; relax twist, tie off and trim

make a loop in a hank of cream CH; tie in on the side and trim

Part 2

repeat on the other side (inverted here)

trim out the tip of a partridge feather, separate a few fibers

strip off the rest then tie in on the underside; pull gently to adjust for length (hook point) and trim butts

add a little more dubbing at the head; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Scott, Nice as usual. Question about the material. I get fliers from the M.S. and I’ve thought of Congo Hair. If you didn’t have it, what would you use? Advantages over other materials, synthetic and/or natural?

Congo Hair is polypropylene, similar to EP Fibers, Widow’s Web, ALM Sea Hair, Swisher’s Gator Hair; sheds water so it provides a bit of buoyancy (floatant helps here, too). I like the Congo Hair over the other products because it’s cheap and comes in a wide variety of colors; disadvantage is the uneven customer service from the Flytyer’s Dungeon - just about anyone who has ordered from there has a story to tell. After one delayed order (3 weeks, multiple unanswered e-mails and ignored phone calls), I finally got smart and bought a bunch of the stuff so I didn’t have to deal with the Dungeonmaster; it’s been 4 years now and my supply is still holding up pretty well.
If you’re not into synthetics, I guess you could go with CDC and snowshoe hare’s foot.

Thanks. I have some synthetics like HiViz and a lot of Poly yarns as well as natural seal fur and the very short hairs/furs of polar bear. So I was just wondering. Oh, the first time I bought something from the M.S. I had asked about the color ‘red’. He sent me 5 packets of different red dyes at no charge. I’ve ordered about 2 or 3 times from him and everything went smoothly. Just sayin.
