We get together every month or so for some good 'ol trash poker. For those who haven’t tried it, this isn’t the glamor game found on TV. It is dealers choice, lots of wildcards, and a lot of kidding around. This entire thread will most likely offend the poker purists among us.
We have a lot of variations but are always looking for more. Anyone else want to share your games? I’ll give an example or 2 to start:
Cross-eyed Monkey Love: a hybrid involving cross-eyes (pairs of different colors are wild) and Monkey Love (5 card draw with your discards going to the player on your left).
Rodney King - if you have a king, your clubs are wild (I know, it isn’t PC, but we found this variation online, so I’m not responsible for it)
Salvation Army - seven card stud. If you get a wild card dealt face up, you donate a chip to everyone that hasn’t folded.
Dr. Pepper - 2, 4 and 10’s are wild. Fun to combine with Salvation Army. Money flows freely around the table.
We have a bunch of others including shifting wildcards.
This thread makes me laugh blue. I especially love the Rodney King one. I am anti-pc but I don’t try to offend. If it happens, it’s by accident and people that offend easily are weak minded IMO. You brought some memories rushing back to me of playing poker on rainy days with my co-workers when I used to do golf course maintenance. Those guys were hilarious (public course, no snobs allowed, well sometimes).
We played “Indian Poker” (could be called Buddha poker I suppose) on occasion - Each player is dealt one card face down. At the same time everyone sticks the card to their foreheads facing out without looking at it. Betting is based on what other players have only. My best friend and I once got into an I can bet more than you match doing that. I had a 3, he had a 2…lol…the other guys playing put a stop to the betting because they thought we were going to plunk down our whole paycheck and get in a fight.
Yeah, we spend more time laughing than playing sometimes. It is one of those where we play penny ante, and you can win all night and almost make enough to buy your gas to get home. Otherwise you start with 2 bucks, play for 3 or 4 hours, and go home at the end of the night with cash left over. That is cheap entertainment.
We play lots of games with rolling wild cards, and it usually happens once a night where a guy thinks he has 3 of a kind or a full house and actually has 5 of a kind.
“Dang, I only have a full house.”
“No you don’t, ya moron! You have 5 kings and you win.”
Not glorious, but it’s more fun than you might imagine. We’ve actually converted a couple of hardcore texas hold-em guys, and they say our version is unpredicable because of the goofy wild cards, but more fun. No pressure, no odds calculating, just hanging out and laughing with the guys.
Haven’t played poker regularly for years, but I always liked “draw poker”. When we were kids, we used to play 7 card stud with deuces, treys, one eyed jacks (spade & heart), & the Man with the Ax (king of diamonds) wild. Obviously, we often folded 4 of a kind!!
Thanks for bringing back a fun memory.
