I was thinking about the upcoming podcasts, I’m really looking forward to them. But I’m not the most technical savvy of guys, so I got to wondering. Is there anything I need to be able to see them other than a computer? I mean I can watch youtube videos, is that enough or will it take more? The other thing, are they recorded or do you have to be online at a certain time to see them?
i dont know if the rest of the podcasts from this site will be video ones but the first one seemed to be a recorded telephone conversation. not higly technical to me.
if they do make a video podcast and post it to a place like itunes, you will probably have to have apples “quick time” viewer to view it. it does come with itunes when you dowload itunes.
maybe youll just have to sit back a bit and be patient and let the podcasters work things out before we all get to see it or even hear it.
then hopefully the management will have a broadcast message on the FAOL home page indicating to us on what the podcasts are and how to access them.
i don’t own ipod and will never install itunes. i like my computer just as it is and itunes wants to take over everything and install apple proprietary drm.
Just a quick note to answer some of your questions.
As of right now, and for at least the foreseeable future, the “podcasts” will be audio only. Video may be something that we go to way down the line, but for now, what you have should work. Ron, as I understand it, will be researching putting it on itunes, but for now it’s available only here on FAOL. I think there is also a link to it on the facebook group too.
As for the video…I am producing Al Campbell’s introduction to fly tying and putting it to video. They will be attached to each part of his 20 part introduction series. There may be more to come for the intermediate and advanced series, but that’s going to be a while from now.
I’m glad to hear that you are all enjoying the new additions, we’re all glad to hear it.
I just sent an email to publisher@flyanglersonline.com explaining how to “put the podcasts on itunes” with a working example. Please let me know if I can help further.
That would be great, if you can get them onto iTunes. I auto download podcasts via iTunes regularly. The only way I listen to podcasts is via my iPod. I’m too busy when I’m on my computer to listen to them there.
Just a little tech info for people. Podcasts are simply RSS feeds. The iTunes podcast function is a RSS feed reader that includes functionality to download the podcasts. Juice is another program that will do the same thing. Basically you point the RSS reader at a special URL (http://www.something.com/podcast.xml) at it reads the xml file to get the podcast info and location to download it from. There are many programs out there that will read RSS feeds and download programs. Apple has done a fantastic job using this technology. All that has to happen, is FAOL host a special .xml file and post the URL, something like http://www.website-name.com/podcast.xml would work. They are already hosting the mp3 files online for download. We would then tell iTunes to include http://www.website-name.com/podcast.xmlas as a podcast (Advanced Menu -> Subscribe to Podcast -> copy/paste URL into box).
