Pocono Fly Fishermen

To all the Pocono Anglers:

Toying with heading up to the Big Bushkill over Thanksgiving weekend. I haven’t fished up there this late in a few years but I had some success in the past with late-season streamer fishing. Anyone getting out on the BK or Brodhead lately?

Any pattern help would be much appreciated. Call me crazy, but I always loved fishing those streams in the early winter…in the cold when you have the whole river to yourself, every little trout is like a trophy for perserverence. Thanks in advance.

Copper Dropper:

Not to throw water, (pardon the pun) on your idea but the Big Bushkill at Resica is fishing lousy. The combination of the early season blow-out; hot dry summer and the most recent October blow-out right before the October stocking really screwed things up this year, especially this fall. I was there two weeks ago and it was very, very slow fishing. Dead may be a better description. If you go; try the stretch ABOVE “Little Falls”.

The Brodhead is probably a better bet although it has received its share of really high water too. All of the fall stockings this year were dumps of fish in easily accessed big holes; some whole sections were skipped because of high water. The “Canyon” stretch can be good this time of year BUT it will be deer season and that stretch can be hairy with hunters around.

You might want to call Dunkelberger’s in Stroudsburg for a fishing report: 570-421-7950.

I’d go with bead head nymphs and streamers. The water temps up there are in the 40’s and there is very little in the way of hatching unless the sun is high but even then I haven’t really seen any risers. Good luck.

If you get frustrated the Lehigh Valley limestoners are 45 minutes away from Stroudsburg and are fishing well.

Great info, Thanks Bam. I figured the conditions might be shaky. Unfortunately, I live a few hours southeast from Resica, so that’s my limit on travel. I won’t go any farther if for no other reson than its almost dark by 3 o’clock and I don’t wanna kill too much time xploring. I know the BK well.

If you live 2 hours SE of Ressica Falls it shouldn’t be to much more trouble to travel 2 hours due west to Allentown, Pa. and fish the Little Lehigh there. Check it out.
