Please help me decide

Time for a new vise.
My funding has limited me to under 80 dollars or less (lower the better). I was hoping for a true rotary vise.
These seem to be my two final contenders. Any experience or advice between the two?

Thanks!

Rawfish;
I had the first one. Note there is no handle to rotate the vice with. If your fingers slip the vise falls back to the start position. I also had problems with the locking knob locking up when rotating the vise. The bobbin holder is only adjustable up and down. It did hold hooks well.
I can’t comment on the Griffith except to say it looks like it has a lot of adjustments.
I bought an E-Z rotary vise with both bases from H&H for $59.95. I think it is a good beginners rotary vise.
I’ve been tying some backassward flys and would like to have a vise that would let me clamp on the eye and then make adjustments to get the hook level.

Rawfish I’m just the opposite from Jack.— I know the Griffin and I cant find who makes the other model. Without that I’m leary of the material. I use all Griffin in my tying and teaching kids and if they cant break it no one can. Odyssey,3ARP and 6 model 2As. All have a Lifetime Guarantee. As Jack said I would have a hard time using the first vice without the handle. Of course you could always make a handle–I added one to my 3ARP Bill

I own the griffin odyssey vice and I love it. If you can get it for under $70 I would go for it. I have tied hooks from size 24 through 0/6 and find the vice easily adjusts to hold them all well. The ‘made in USA’ and ‘lifetime warranty’ are an extra bonus.

While I have never needed a warranty repair I did contact the service department to purchase some new thumb screws when I got too close with a lighter while tying (oops!.) They just sent me the new screws for free, even though it was clearly pilot error.

Rawfish,

Of the two vises you show, I’d go for the Griffin. Good product and a bombproof guarantee.

If I might throw out another option though, Al Beatty has a Dan Vise for sale on his sponsor page for $80. I know several folks who tie on the Dan Vise, including Al Beatty, and it’s a great vise, not to mention another bomb proof gaurentee.

I know them both. Go with Griffin. The other is none adjustable.

No offense, but that no-name “Deluxe” vise looks like junk. Without the jaw position adjustment, its value as a true rotary vise is negated.

Since I don’t have money to throw around, I see the value in buying right the first time. I can’t afford to replace items needlessly.

Griffin makes quality tools for tying. That’s a good price for a good tool. I’m sure it will not only perform much better than that other thing, but it will be backed by a fine company.

Hopefully you will be satisfied with whichever choice you make.

go to Bookmailer.com–lafontaine has a great vise that will serve you well

dmdmd,
The vise they are selling is the Danvise and for the same price as our sponsor Al Beatty. It looks like a nice product and I’ll probably get one soon myself.

Rawfish: Would you feel comfortable buying a vise from someone who can?t spell rotary? - which should be written on the box. It just makes me uneasy about their level of accountability and attention to detail.

I have the first one. It’s junk out of the box. If you take it apart and loctite everything that should not move, it’s usable though. The rotary feature is a pain to use and the tension adjustment always binds up on me. On a plus side, it is a lot more adjustable than it looks(as far as hook position goes). It does do what a vice is supposed to do though, it holds hooks up to 3/0 pretty good, and down to 18(I don’t tie smaller).

If it was up to me, I’d say get the Griffin.
