Helpful thread as I am heading up to the Boundary waters in May looking for Pike and Lakers. I’m a fan of RIO Toothy Critter leaders, having used them for toothy fish in salt and fresh with great success. I’m just not sure what to use when I try some surface poppers as the steel pulls them down. I like the idea of fireline. Have to get a few yards from my spinning buddies.
I’m not so sure fireline is a good bite tippet for pike. I can easily cut it with a knife but steel resists much better.
As for poppers being pulled under by the steel, last summer I used one made out of a wine bottle cork and had no trouble with it being pulled under.
Berkley fireline is awesome for pike n muskie leaders no memory never kinks or coils and is extreamely tooth resistant all I’ve used for years n have yet to lose a fish to fireline failure… 20lb is bout the dia. of 10-12 lb mono love the stuff…
