Pflueger Medalist Fly Reel

Thw wife sent me to Wal-Mart today. While there I found Pflueger Medalist fly reels on sale for $19.00.

Not a big Wally fan, but for that kind of a deal I’ll go trolling. JGW

Panman;
What model? I paid 24 bucks for a 1492 at Cabela’s

I love 'em. If you take my advice, get it. If you don’t like it, give it away. For that price you can’t go broke. I think I’ll make a trip to Wally-World.

I am still using the Medalist 1495’s I purchased in 1969. Can’t kill them. I don’t mind spending money on Orvi$ rods, but just can’t spend several hundreds of dollars on a fly reel. Buy 2 at that price.

Jack:
At our store only 1495’s. But who knows what, if any, you might find at yours.

Tim

I think the Medalist sold for about $12 in the early 60’s. Except for metric screws the parts are interchangable from that day to this.
When I started ffing I wanted a Medalist but couldn’t come up the the $12. I settled for a $3 South Bend instead (I still have that reel).
I have been buying a few old Medalists off ebay I guess cuz I couldnt afford one then. They are a workhorse of a reel and at the Wally price a good buy.

I was at W**mart yesterday too. They also had the 1495 on sale for $19. I didn’t need one.
I did buy a couple of rod bags for $4+change and a chest pack for $11.

Yup, what JC said. Aftre buying a number of expensive reels, San Miguels, Bauers, Tetons etc, I picked out a couple older 1494DA’s off of Ebay recently.

I’ll use them mostly for warmwater…thought I’d see what all the fuss is about.

Seems like a pleasant change. Bullet-proof reels. Cheap. Tanks (in a good way.)

I’m kind of surprised at my choices really. Putting a reel like that on a $2000 bamboo rod seems “odd.”

I’m likin’ “odd”!! Must be having a mental meltdown because I usually prefer expensive gadgets. I’m ok with these!

Jeremy.

Are these RC’s?

No duckster, these are 1495’s only. The RC is the 1500 series.
These are not the most useful size IMO. They would match up with a 7wt maybe.
I have my 7wt lines on a 1494 1/2 and for my 8wt lines I use a 1495 1/2 which I guess is no longer made.
The (1/2) sizes being a wider diameter than the others.

Jeremy, I have been using 1492 1/2 Medalists on cane rods. They have enough room for a 5 wt line and a decent amount of backing, great sound as opposed to the clickity-clack of the bigger reels. I had to put a newer (chinese) reel foot on um to fit slide band reel seat.

Akron made 1492 1/2s are hard to come by cuz they were made for just a few years before Shakespeare moved production to Arkansas. As a matter of fact I have never seen one.

1492’s have all the featurs of a classic reel (non adjustable drag, great looks and caged spool) at a fraction of the cost of those reels.

Used to think they were kinda cheeeeeezy looking…not anymore…got a mint vintage 1973 on my Hook and Hackle 4wt that just goes together like bread and butta! It even came with new Air-flo line onit for 8 bucks including shipping. The other one is a 1496 and a hlf with the large arbor conversion installed. $12.00 whole dollars! hard to beat 'em IMO. the fish love 'em, too!
