I bought the Pettijean Magic Tool about a year ago and tied some flies with it. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. I then put it aside and it’s been collecting dust for the last 10 months. Anyone else have that experience? On the more positive side of the coin, how many of our board members keep the Magic Tool right on their desk top because you use it constantly? Just curious! 8T
whats a Pettijean Magic Tool ??
it is a really cool tool that makes dubbing from feathers… but i make my feather dubbing by hand :?
8T,
I got mine a few years ago and still use it quite a bit, especially the clamps. However, I do use it in streaks, but I guess that’s to be expected because it’s not made to use with a lot of types of flies. I do like it and use it, though.
Joe
I got y’all beat…
…I bought one and NEVER used it…
I was just looking at it the other day thinking…hmmm, I wonder if that will keep my potato chip bag closed?
Hey, if you don’t use it, i will take it =P. A freind of mine said that it makes an awsome nymph pattern, and a cracy spinner.
JZ
Yes, it is.
Bamboozle,
 You gave me the best laugh of the morning. I bet those clips are great for closing snack-food bags. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who never gets around to using the magic tool. In a similar vein, I have three sets of brass wing burners (mayfly, caddis & stone fly) that I never use either. You don’t know of an alternative use for those do you? 8T
8T,
Would you like a fourth set of wing burners?
Joe
8T, I keep it handy, because I use it alot for krystal flash hackles, dubbing brushes and lots things
CC
Joe,
I think that I might take you up on your offer and turn the whole bunch of wing burners into rhinestone-encursted cigarette holders which I will sell to spoiled little brats like Paris Hilton for $4000 each  . 8T
8T,
If you know Paris Hilton, see if she wants to buy a few old dubbing loop twisters, too. And a dozen or two of some cheap, worthless hackle pliers. No telling what you could tell her those are…
Joe
Joe,
Paris and I are old friends and have fished together for several years. Few people realize that Paris is highly accomplished in both fly fishing and fly tying. She can actually lay out over seventy feet of line with her #3 weight Sage and can consistently hit a two foot target. I will mention your offer of the hackle pliers to her the next time we’re fly fishing together in Beverly Hills    8T
8T,
I have always thought just by looking at her that she was a flyfisher. I can picture her right now in her hippers…
Joe
JZ, I see from you profile you are, a no doubt poverty stricken student.
A bout three or four bulldog clips of various sizes make a good substitute
for about half of the Magic Tool.
I just know that there are more people out there who bought a Pettijean Magic Tool and tucked it away in a drawer after a couple of flies. Come on, fess up you guys. Confession is good for the soul.   8T
I have a Reinhold “Amazing Hackyl Foldyr” of unknown vintage still in the package
Does that count?
We’d all be better fly tiers if we spent half the money we spend on tools, took the difference and bought better materials. Make that 10% of the money we spend on tools. Nobody needs a $350 vise, especially me. But I, of course, have one, had to try rotary tying (moron). Tools are fun though, especially the day you buy them. I am pleased and proud to say I did not fall for the Magic tool, but I did think about it, hard.
Eric
Yup! And there it sits.
Dudley,
How can I get one! I’ve folded hackle by hand for years not knowing that there was a tool I could buy that would do the same thing. In answer to your question, the hackle folder definitely counts. 8T
