Pepperoni Yuk Bug SBS

Salmonfly variation on the basic Yuk Bug? First time I tried these was at the Barn’s Hole during the fall run-up from Hebgen. Kind of an interesting experience; everyone hopping in at the top of the run, working down to the bottom and then starting all over again. Only place I’ve ever seen that done in the park. Saw some pigs caught, most folks using spaghetti and meatballs; got a real nice whitie on this thing (and a smallish 'bow).

hook - Mustad 79580 #6
underbody - lead free .030
thread - Uni 3/0 orange
Tail - fox squirrel tail
body - chenille black (back) and orange (front)
legs - rubber medium black
hackle - grizzly hen dyed orange

Part 1

Mash down barb and wrap shank with lead-free wire (stop one hook eye width short so things don’t get crowded at the finish line)

attach thread, cover underbody and brush with a little Sally

measure a clump of fox squirrel tail to shank length and tie in

trim squirrel butts at underbody wraps (makes for a smoother transition)

strip end of chenille to expose thread cord

tie in, and move thread to 50 % position on shank

tie in rubber leg near

and far

wrap chenille forward with last wrap in front of rubber legs

pull legs towards the back and wrap a piece of lead-free to keep them out of the way

Part 2

prep saddle hackle (custom Kool-Aide dye job)

tie in orange chenille and hackle (trim the tag after hackle is wrapped)

move thread forward to 75% mark and tie in second set of rubber legs

wrap chenille forward, tie off; then follow with hackle (about 6 wraps), tie off, and add Sally

unwrap rear legs and trim both sets (shank length)

front view

Fun to play with meat flies after a spate of teeny-tinys recently.

Scott

The past few weeks, my friend Dale G. has been using the regular version on stocker trout, and has been doing very well with it. Great SBS as usual, Scott!
