Looks like a great camera. Other than the looks (which I’m not fond of), the only forseeable issue I could see would be pixel crowding (12.1 MP on a 1/2.33 CCD is pretty packed). Still, it has a great feature set, including several nice new additions without getting rid of any of the good stuff from past models. I really wish my WS80 had the digital microscope mode and the LEDs.
Well…yes and no. It could certainly be used…but if you read carefully, you’ll notice that in that microscope mode, it drops your image quality down to 2.1MP. I’d be willing to bet that this mode is simply telling the camera to take a standard macro shot, with a spot-autofocus dead-center in the field of view. Normally, it’d also probably boost your ISO, but with the LEDs it can leave the ISO a bit lower, which is the main advantage. It seems like the microscope mode takes a standard macro shot, then crops out all but 2.1MP in the center of the frame…which, in and of itself, is kind of undesirable (you could do this, easily, on your own, in post-processing a regular macro shot), but the LED assistance up close is really what I’d like for macro shots in poor lighting out on the stream.
For shooting flies in the vise, there’s no substitute for good lighting. Use macro mode, of course, but I probably wouldn’t use microscope, for the simple cast that all of your shots will be at 2.1MP. If you take a regular macro shot from farther away and crop it down, I’m willing to bet you’ll end up with a better looking picture.
Still, this assumes you’ve got adequate lighting and (preferably) use a small tripod.
I think im going to get it… i have a buddy that wants to buy my current camera so i am thinking hard on it, what do you guys think? Is there a better one for a better price?
