pedistal for thompson model AA

latel i have been tyeing a large number of flies at our local boarder while waiting for my girlfriend to get off work. currently use an old shoe shine box with a board attached to hold the clamp for my vice. the proble is that the hight does not allow for my vice shaft assorie to be used. trash bag and bobben holder. so iam looking for a used bace. willing to trade or buy thank you all

Find a local machine shop. Take them the vise. Have them cut you a piece of 1/2" steel plate large enough for a base (say 8x12", you may have to buy this from a steel recycling place), drill a hole in it, same diameter as the vise shaft, near the center of one end, then put threads on the bottom of the vise shaft and in the hole so that the two can be screwed together.

The heavier and larger the pedestal the more stable it will be, but the less portable.

or you can try this one

My Peak vise has a base which is very heavy and stable. Unfortunately its hole is a tad undersized for my Thompson A. I suppose it would be relatively easy to bore the hole slightly or turn down the bottom 3/4 of an inch of your Thompson’s post to make it fit. Sometimes when I travel I don’t like to travel with that chunk of steel; instead I use the clamp of my Thompson A either with the Thompson or the Peak.
Here is the base of which I speak.
Good luck on your search.

You might want to take into consideration that most C-clamp vise shafts are longer than pedestal vise shafts. Have a couple of Thompson C-clamp vises & the shafts are 2" longer than pedestal vise shafts.

I have yet to find a factory pedestal base that is big enough to be as stable as I want. I just use the clamp, but then again I don’t use any of the stuff that people put on the shafts, either.

I found a base at Cabela’s for about $10., cut the stem off, slipped it into the base and tightened the set screw.

Use the c-clamp and buy one of these CHEEP!

Norm,
