Paulson's Fluttering Salmonfly (Carnage variation) SBS

A few changes to Eric Paulson’s very interesting pattern; original body was tied Rogue style. Mr. Twister on a hook; 0x tippet recommended.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #6
thread - UTC 140 hot orange
core - 20lb mono
tail/underbody - moose body hair
abdomen - 1 mm foam cinnamon
wings - mallard flank
over wing - elk hair
legs - medium rubber brown
head - elk hair dyed dark brown

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at head

clean, stack, measure (butts extending gap width past bend) a healthy clump of elk hair; trim butts, tie in with 2 soft loops, pull tight and let it spin at the eye

put a loop on the end of the mono

brush on a little Super Glue, tie in mono

clean, stack, measure (2x hook length) a clump of moose body; trim butts, tie in, hook loop onto gallows

Part 2

spiral thread up moose and back down

tie in foam strip (1/3 gap width), brush underbody with a little Super Glue, wrap foam up, and back down; tie off/trim, trim mono

measure mallard flank (tip to base of tail), concave side up; tie in/trim

clean, stack, measure (tips even with wing) a clump of elk; trim butts/tie in

Part 3

prep a pair of mallard flank feathers; tie in on either side, convex to convex

push hair back, distribute evenly around hook

pull hair back with other hand; capture with 2 soft loops and pull tight

add legs, whip finish, SHHAN

trim out underside

Part 4

trim legs; 2018 hatch is just around the corner
