I wanted something to imitate the bass fry I’m seeing in the ponds I fish. Here’s what I came up with. Bead head on a Streamer hook. I add about 6-10 wraps of lead to lock the bead and add weight. olive marabou tail.***** creek weave olive back white belly. three turns of olivsaddle hackle as a collar behind the beadhead for movement. The fish seem to like it. I’ve thought of adding a strand of olive krystal flash on each side to imitate the lateral line ,but I think I’m over analyzing. What do you people think?
I think that sounds like a pretty darn good imitation. I would love to see a picture of one also if you could get one posted.

I think peacock KF as you mentioned would look awesome on that patteren…lol…If I could ever get that d@*#N weave thing down now…lol
“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best

Coach Rob-
Mind dunking it and taking another photo? Like to see what the tail looks like wetted. Tail looks very full all fluffed up. Overdressed? Dunno yet…
Also a few strands of flash coming right out of the center of tail couldn’t hurt much-and might help. Flashtails work! Nice fly there-either way.

I’m curious Rich, how do you tell how marabou looks under water just having it wet out in the air?..doesn’t undulate, etc…for me at least when I put mine away wet they don’t look anything like when they’re in the water???

Guilty as charged. When I’m trying to imitate a fry I overdress the tail this has three marabou feathers. When I’m trying to imitate a leech I use one. Even with the three it still undulates and tapers down alot. The other thing to remember is if your are trying to catch fish or fishermen. Sometimes I over dress my demonstration ties to be easily seen. My scouts love the Musky leech I tie on a 3/0 hook that looks like a boat anchor. I’ve never thrown it but for demonstration purposes it always gets a grin.
Thanks Coach!
Awesome picture, and just about how I imagined it. I think I now ‘need’ to tie me up some new flies to try. First I gotta get the weave down better however.

ducksterman-
To answer your question on the action: I sort of know from experience that the maribou will undulate just fine. Also from experience, if I see the wetted tail (just like when the fly is lifted from the water) I can sort of tell if it could use fewer or more feather on it from having thrown so many doll jigs and buggers.
I am guilty of over dressing flies too. I am trying to put less on them these days. It doesn’t take much material in the water to attract a fish. I mean-look at a Partidge and Orange Soft Hackle fly. Nothin’ there hardly and those work well and undulate.
Coah Rob- I too dress them fuller for demos and to please the camera. Once again-Neat pattern.
