Part II/Sheath Colors ---- La Fontaine Deep Sparkle Pupa and Emerger Patterns

I was able to get a copy of La Fontaine’s book “Caddis Flies.” He says the sparkle yarn used to encase the body represents the translucent case prior to it emerging to adult.

My question:

1.) If the sparkle yarn fibers represent the translucent sheath wouldn’t clear antron suffice? It seems they are tied with different colors.

2.) If colored yarn is necessary for the sheath, should the colors of the sheath match the colors of the body of the fly?

Just trying to generate a discussion and figure this thing out.

Thanks

That is why I said the sheath should be pretty much translucent…may have said the opposite by mistake…and sparse…with the body being a bright color to be seen through the sheath. But, I think a hint of Amber color in the sheath works well.

I think you will also find that the Antron sheath was selected by Lafontaine as it trapped air bubbles which mimicked the gas bubble caddis emergers are said to expel to help them reach the surface and break through the meniscus.
