I am heading out to Park City in the morning for five days.
Any suggestions for small stream, read: hiking, wading, nearby.
We are staying at the Stein Erikson Lodge in Deer Valley and I would like to find some water very nearby as I am continuing the fly-fishing experience with my nine year old daughter.
Driving to a good spot would be okay, but the quicker to water the better.
Drys or nymphs isn’t important, the experience is.
Thanx in advance,
~ ZM
When driving into town, look for TroutBum 2 on the right side of the road. When I was there 4 years ago, TroutBum 2 and Fran’s(?) were the two best fly shops in town. TroutBum 2 really treated me well, and will be very helpful getting you to water. Get your license there too of course.
I have to tell you, my favorite water was about a 1 1/2 hour drive. A brookie freestone river with some grayling mixed in. Pretty easy/skinny for kids to fish – my 14 year-old was 10 then. Bear country, but then bears are everywhere out there.
I agree, Troutbum2 is a decent shop (I don’t think that there is a Troutbum1 anywhere either…). Nearby PC you can fish the Provo. I believe that they added some parking spots in anticipation of the Olympics when they were there a few years ago. I also fished the little creeks around sundance. Also ask the shop about any creeks that run into or out of the lake nearby. I think that this is where I scouted out some spots last time I was there but didn’t get to fish them (I live on the East Coast and the bro/sis in-law used to live in Heber City).
Have a great time!

Here’s another good fly shop in PC
You will be close to the Provo staying at Stein. It fishes well - but you may want to check current water conditions (run-off). They can also put you on some smaller water - but the places I have been are a bit farther away. I know there is some private water in the area as well.
Enjoy your trip - it’s a great area.
I’m sure you’re already there. Wish I’d seen this earlier!!
You could not ask for a better location to be heading if you want to fish (or do anything outdoors actually). If you happen to check FAOL while you’re out there, maybe you’ll see this.
I grew up in American Fork, which is about 1.5 hours south of Park City. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the northern and directly western parts of Park City; however, south and east is my old stomping ground. As others have said, it is tough to beat the Provo. You are probably closest to the Middle Provo (there is upper which is from the Uinta mountains down to Jordanelle Res. The middle from Jordanelle res. down to Deercreek res. and the Lower, which is from Deercreek down to Utah Lake in the valley). The Middle Provo would be your best bet.
I’m told that the rivers are just now starting to slow down and clear up a little bit. They had a heafty winter there and the snowpack has taken quite a while to melt. If you want to make the drive down into Provo Canyon and hit the Lower Provo I can PM you a few nice spots and give you my go to flies there too. Check here for some pretty decent information too: utahwildlifenetwork.com.
Have fun in the greatest state in the Nation! please post some pics of you and your daughter fishing when you get back!!
Also, if you want any hikes or other acitivities that are family friendly let me know…
