Pardon my exuberance, but.........Marc Petijean Vise

Hi,

I am quite excited today. My Petijean vise arrived in the mail today. I would like to share a few photos and a description of the vise with you.

I admit that I am a vise-aholic. I have owned a number of vises over the years, But, this, and tying/flyfishing are my only vices.
Well, that is one of my rationalizations. I have others.

Anyway, this is how the vise arrived…in the padded travel case.

[

I](http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/byhaugh/media/IMG_5496_zps2fdc9818.jpg.html)nside the case are: The vise itself, an aluminum heavy base, an alignment tool and 3 tube fly mandrels, instructions, and an instructional dvd.

[

T](http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/byhaugh/media/IMG_5497_zpsb9e4bf1c.jpg.html)he base has several cut-out ports to hold hooks, beads, etc. One corner foot has a leveling screw which makes even an uneven table, stable.

[

T](http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/byhaugh/media/IMG_5499_zps782a9d62.jpg.html)he vise itself with the included alignment tool to assist with adjusting the jaws pitch to ensure true rotary axis alignment of the hook shank.

[

H](http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/byhaugh/media/IMG_5498_zps7327cc7a.jpg.html)ere the vise is on my cluttered table with a hook in the jaws.

[

I](http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/byhaugh/media/IMG_5500_zps59c22389.jpg.html)f anyone would like, I could post a review of its use after a few days. At this point, I can say it is one of the smoothest rotating vises I have ever had. It has a ball bearing housing for the rotary function…I am pretty sure. I have had other ball bearing vises before, but the jaws and particularly the jaw arm were heavier and did not rotate as smoothly.

I am not sure this will replace my Jvice, but I have been intrigued for a long time about this vise. I have “played” with one in shops, but never had much time to work on it.

If you would like a full review of its functionality, let me know and in a few days, I will provide one.

Thanks for putting up with my excitement of a new tool!

Enjoy it, happy tying.

Gene

Glad you managed to get one. I’d be interested to know about the hook release system. Apparently the jaws don’t let go instantly when you operate the lever.
Anyway enjoy it.
Cheers,
A.

Nice, nice vise. Yes, please post your review. While I may never get it, I would love to read about it!
Mike

That is the most beautiful vise I have ever seen. I know I will never own anything like it but I would like to read about how it works from you. Thank you for sharing.

Alan,
The jaws are spring loaded. To put a hook in the vise, you lightly squeeze the rear end of the jaws to open the jaws and they close, lightly, on the hook. This is to allow you to reposition the hook, if necessary, before you lock the jaws with the lever.
The reverse is done when removing the hook.

It will be interesting to hear what you think of the alignment tool, Byron.
Also your comparison with the Jvise. You know what I’m hoping your choice is.

That is one beautiful piece of equipment. In one sense it’s out of my financial and tying ability league…but at the same time I have a few bamboo rods that cost well past that and don’t fish any better than my 1960’s Shakespeare Wonderods. I just much more greatly enjoy those rods and would love to tie on a vise like that. You have a great piece of metal there and will look forward to a further review.

Finding a fly tying vise you love is a beautiful thing. Enjoy!
I’ve never seen an MP vise in person, which is probably a good thing as far as my wife is concerned.

Wishing the two of you many years of happiness…

Ditto! (lol)

Allan

Congrats, it a beauty!

Byron when you get started with tubes post pictures of how its set up
I am curious. Thats one fine vise, as with all of Marc’s tools its over engineered
and finished perfectly! Very envious.

That is a very nice piece of equipment Byron. As vices go, a love of vises doesn’t seem to be that bad of a vice. Maybe you should get the Hawaiian governor to declare you as Viceroy of Vises.

Good one Jesse!!!
Will see if I can get that designation.

Wow…what craftsmanship! That is a true work of art!
