Panfish Fly Patterns

I’m sorry, but I looked through the archives and I can’t find the articles on making foam panfish flies (poppers). Is there a section with panfish patterns?
Thanks

Go to the FAOL home page put “foam fly patterns” in the search block.

Or Google “Sam’s One Bug”. :^)

If you want the article on making bugs with a dremel tool it is here:

Look for Bikini Hopper Popper coming to FOTW soon.

Or, run a search on the FAOL homepage for the “Gurgle Pop”. I’ve tied a few, a yellow size 8, a yellow size 12, and a black size 8. I’ve caught several sunnies on it, and I think I had a bass take a swipe at it yesterday. I need to get some bigger hooks and tie some truly bass-sized Gurgle Pops.

Has anyone had any experience with a pattern called the Cap Spider? Here is an interesting video, and I’m considering tying up a few. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzZekzILGRI

Paul,

The Cap Spider is an extremely effective pattern panfish pattern and it should be in every warmwater fly fisherman’s arsenal. My go-to pattern in the summer.

That video is kind of hard to watch and see. Is there a step-by-step tutorial anywhere?

How is this, Lastchance: http://www.trails.com/how_40187_cap-spider-fly-tying-instructions.html

Yep. Thanks, Paul.

Here’s another link. How many guys invented thsi fly

Lastchance: This “Jay Renken” design is a variation of the one I posted. It has fewer legs (half as many) and the chenille body is palmered, like a bugger. It may catch just as many or more fish than the original, but it is still a variation in my book. I like the look of the original and believe in keeping a pattern simple when feasible.

Both flies use jighead hooks, though, although the variation recipe suggests that heavier ones be considered. For fly tackle, I think the lightest possible jighead is the best jighead unless size of hook is an issue.

Lastchance, are you by chance from Helena, Montana? They have a Last Chance Gulch and Last Chance Saloon there.

My father was the creator of Sam’s One Bug. Here is a copy of the original article in Fly Fishing and Tying Journal with the recipe. You can also find it listed by Warren Patterson under the archives fly of the day here on FAOL

Interesting, and thanks.

my two favorite panfish flies that I tie are a stealth bomber and a red zebra midge. Id also pick up some neon poppers, they works amazing too.
