Pa. Fish In

It is going to happen. It will be in the Pine Creek Valley. Probably at either Petticoat Junction Campground or Happy Acres Campground. We will be taking a trip up either on the 21st or 28th to check with both. Dates will be either June 13 or 14 through 18. Wet Fly Guy, Pafisherman and Big Daddy Rods will be working with me to get it set up. I am posting this to try to get a rough idea of how many might be interested in attending and if they would like it to start on a Tues or Weds and run through Sunday. Please either respond on this site or ship me an e-mail. Not a formal commitment just reply if you feel you might be able to make it. Will be good when talking to campgrounds. Also state preferance for starting either on Tues. or Weds. LadyFisher has been good enough to offer to set up a site for us when we have info squared away. Dates were chosen so as not to conflict with other fish ins or the 4th of July and also to allow fishing those waters while some decent hatches should still be available. Lots of good streams near to both campgrounds, plenty of native streams also. We are going to have one rule for the fish in. “You must have fun”. Looking forward to replies and suggestions.

Dry Fly Guy;
Can you give me a nearby town so I can check the driving distance?

jack

that would be cedar run, PA.

i would go for the petticoat junction site because its better access to the canyon, cedar and slate runs.

also for those that want to rent a room, the Manor Hotel is in slate run (570) 753-8414, just 5 miles from cedar run.

a little article on the area

Shouldn’t this be on the “events” page?

Tuesday is fine with me.

If you cannot find Slate Run try Waterville, if that does not work try Jersey Shore.

Sounds like fun, I’ll try to make it!

Here are a couple of phone # for CG’s in the Pine Creek Valley.

Happy Acres…570-753-8221
Pettecote Juction… 570-353-7183

I’ll be camping and chasing Largemouth Bass that week so I won’t be able to make it but I will be there two weeks earlier and I can at least let you know how it was then.

Here are two links that you all may find valuable:

I can tell you this much: Memorial Day Weekend 2005 the water levels were REALLY LOW. The readings were:[ul]*Streamflow - 198 cubic feet per second
*Gage Height - 1.47 feet[/ul]

In 2004 on the same weekend the readings were:[ul]*Streamflow - 550.96 cubic feet per second
*Gage Height - 2.04 feet[/ul]

The levels in 2004 were ideal so at least this will give you a reference on what to expect.

Have fun!

Nothing rings a bell… Near Penn State?, Philly?, Carlisle> Pittsburg? Williamstown? Scranton?

Okay, sort of Central Northern Pa.

Will be a bit more specific on location. Still going to look at two locations, not very far apart . Start at Williamsport, go about 15 miles west on US Rt. 220 to Jersey Shore. Here we take Pa. 44 North which pretty well follows the Pine Creek. Twelve miles north we are in Waterville, if Happy Acres is the choice a three mile drive along Little Pine Creek will put you there. Instead if we go with Petticoat Junction you will continue up 44 for about another 20 miles. Either way you will be in north central Pa. sorrounded by lots of very good trout streams, one lake and even some smallmouth and walleye fishing. Hope this is of some help.

HI i will be there, have place on loyalsock so i will drive over. i plan to go to the TU meeting on the 24 talk to you then, first time in years. will bring two guys with. Bruce i have some material and rod blanks from shop closing maybe the club can use. flyman 3 pottsville

Flyman-- Great to hear ffrom you. Will call you this week on materials. Your showing up will make the fish in much better.

Wayne Pa to Cedar Run Pa is 231 miles.

Try using Yahoo maps to get the location and driving directions and distance if you are not able to find Cedar Run on another map.

Nick:

Probably 3-3/4 to 4 hours for you from Wayne.

Dry Fly Guy,

I think I’m about 2 hours away and may be able to make it down for a full day with maybe a stayover. Cannot commit at this time.

Sounds like fun.

Folks, this is my back yard. I’ve got to be honest and say these dates may not present the good fishing conditions we’d all like to experience. The bottom fell out of the fishing up here by the first week of June last year.

Pine Creek is a marginal trout water and may see temps in the upper 70’s by that time even in a normal year. We’ve had it reach 80 by that time in lean water years.

As for the runs, low flows make for VERY challenging fishing for the wild browns and native brookies which inhabit them.

While there can be good hatches larger olives, cahills, slate drakes, etc. at this time of year the fishing can be hit-or-miss if conditions are less than desirable. I’ve hosted small groups in this area in the past and I would not consider having a group in this area after the first of June because of the unpredictability of the stream conditions come mid-June or later.

I don’t mean to be a party-pooper, just a realist.

I have to agree with Paralep on this one.
If the date is firm I would look at the State College Area. There are plenty of streams that will have good flow that time of year. Spring Creek, Fishing Creek (Lamar)
Bald Eagle, Penns is not too far away. If the date can be moved up into May than the Pine Creek Valley would be okay.
JUst another opinion.
