Joe, our doors are open to everyone and we would love to have you and your friends come share a stream with us. We have two ovens, we could bake a lot of extras.
We are family-come join us.
I echo Randy’s sentiments - Joe, you’d fit in REALLY well with this bunch (especially if you brought some pumpkin roll )
FWIW, I stayed in one of the Mountain Den cabins two years ago. They’re like little motel rooms. One big double bed bunk bed, small refrigerator, small table and chairs, coat rack, and a TV/VCR. Enough room for two, and pretty cheap. You’re only in there to sleep anyway - the rest of your time will be spent fishing, and down at the lodge. They’re about 75 yards from the lodge. Most of the other cabins are closer to the lodge. If two people split the cost of a Mountain Den cabin, you’d get away with spending under a hundred bucks for lodging and meals COMBINED for the week (if memory serves me correctly). You can’t even live out of a tent for that anywhere else!
For those not staying in the lodge, bring a roll of quarters for the showers. This is the only thing I didn’t like about the campground - everything else is top notch. The shower/bathroom facility is big and centrally located, but the paths to it are gravel. Sandals or flip flops would be the ticket. You also need to bring your own towels. I don’t know if the other larger cabins have their own bathrooms, but the Mountain Den ones don’t.
And those ham sandwich scented green drakes worked nicely, thank you very much!
Dang! I didn’t know you Bill Hillies knew anything about cookin?!? Heck, I’d a been there sooner if I knew y’all has such good groceries. That spread’s almost as good as what Brad and Fat Bill put together in Michigan. Maybe I can talk the vise thief into a road trip across the border. He’s always good for about 15 pounds of fudge no matter where he goes. Heck, he even mailed it to the Idaho Fish-In and he wasn’t even there. LMAO
We’ll have to process this one a little bit to make sure you guys aren’t just inviting us so you can steal our recipes and secret Island Nation fly patterns for ditch trout (steelhead).
Good people… good times…good food…I simply can’t pass this up. I AM coming. The pain of waiting is going to be excruciating !!! My brother in law is not YET a member but I’m working on resolving that issue.
Bernie
Why, from my boss, of course! They actually pay me to wave a fly rod around all day. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.
Farleycat - Everyone learns new things at these events. No one knows everything about fly fishing, but by adding all our knowledge together and sharing it with everyone, we all become better fishermen. Ladyfisher calls it “sharing the wealth”, and that’s an accurate description of a Fish-In.
As a newbie from the 2008 PA Fish-in I feel compelled to share some advice with those planning to attend the 2009 Fish-In for the first time.
If you stay or eat in the lodge you’ll need the following:
You’ll need your Fat Pants since it’s like Thanksgiving dinner every day. Alternately, you can bring your bike to ride with Heritage, me and others along the trail.
Next, there is a fair amount of night time “singing” in the bedrooms. I must admit to leading some of the performances. So having ear plugs may be a good idea. And I won’t even comment on those who don’t effectively process all that food which causes excess pressure to build up until the body’s relief value actuates resulting in the release of aromas that must be experienced to be truly appreciated.
And the most important thing to remember is to bring your own steak knife for steak night. The plastic knifes simply don’t cut it (pun intended).
Now that the important stuff has been discussed I can also tell you that I went alone to the Fish-In and didn’t know a sole. That quickly changed. Everyone is extremely friendly and willing to share knowledge. It’s like having a team of highly experienced guides that can help you with tying, equipment setup, fly selection and fishing tactics. Sometimes two of them even agree on the right way to do something.
I highly recommend this event. Good people, good fishing and good food at a great price. What else can you ask for?
winter is going to pass very nicely as i daydream aobut this. got a cabin lined up and everything. you do not want to try to sleep under the same roof as us…
i’m guessing sulphurs, right? any hatch advice would help me stock the fly boxes. these days flies are so expensive that it really does pay to tie my own, especially since two of us are fishing them. of course, i bring the tying kit and buy a few from the local shop 'cause no two sulphur hatches are the same: Little J “sulphurs” are peachy, and Big Cove’s are almost white. let me know if anything else in the insect line is expected.
oh…and the best part? my favorite cuisine: “i didn’t cook it!” really, you couldn’t ask for a more appreciative eater.
As a newbie from last year, I’ll have to weigh in at this point! I gained 11# in 5days and I fished all day! I went there never having taken a trout on a dry fly and left with quite a bunch under my belt! For the guy that wanted to know which flies were hatching my notes say there were a few Sulphers, but we were catching trout on March Browns, Grey Foxes, BWO’s, and my personal favorite the Light Cahill, which I was actually fishing a WHITE Cahill and sometimes a white Wulff. Actually an emerger trailing along under the main fly took more trout than the dries. I remember that the day we left a helluva hatch of Green Drakes and Coffin Flys happened. And plenty of trout were also caught on nymphs and wets. I hope this doesn’t jinx me but my 1 grandson graduates HS in Phoenix AZ. in May, but I think it’s the week before the fish in! Can’t wait.
Hi Dave!
Looks to me like the LAST word associated with you should be “newbie”.
Dave’s fly list is very good, but I’d like to add caddis dries to the list. My favorite is the cdc/elk pattern invented by FAOL’s Hans Weilenmann. I’ve caught more fish up there on that fly than any other pattern (sizes 12, 14, 16, 18, 20). They work especially well on Little Pine and Kettle Creek. We didn’t see too much of the big stoneflies last year, but the year before they were all over. Big golden stones, like 1 1/2" to 2" long. There can be a significant yellow sally hatch on as well, especially on Kettle.
For the newcomers as well as the veterans, I’ll be doing my “pre-Fish-In” scouting trip up on Kettle the week before the Fish-In. I’ll be sure to post what we find in the way of conditions and hatches so everyone will know what to bring. My fishing buddy Tom (AFISHN here on FAOL) will be with me and he’s coming to the Fish-In as well. Tom knows the Pine Creek watershed as well as anyone I know of, so we’ve got another “guide caliber” angler to help out. If any of you other Fish-In guys want to join the scouting trip, we’ve got a nice cabin that can hold a couple more guys, and you’re welcome to stay with us. We don’t cook at the cabin - we go out to eat, so all it’ll cost you is meal money. We eat pretty well, but next to the Fish-In, it’s like a starvation diet!
You guys are starting to scare me. I definitely do not need to gain any weight! It has been a struggle to loose the weight that I have lost this year. ;)
Gene—I hate to do this but…
Tell us what you, Dave and Uncle Ed were discussing this night in question…
I think Chris and his dad were there too. Can’t see them. Talked with Uncle Ed the other day and he’s ready to go…NOW
We all had a great time. Too bad it finished so quick…Yes, and the green drakes were fantastic on the last night.Shoulda stayed another two weeks. Ran out of refreshments…
REMINDER:::: Bring fan for windows!!!
I had to go home and get some sleep. I think total I got 9 hrs sleep in 5 days.
Sounds interesting and a lot of fun, not to mention the amount of food. May have to put some time aside for this. Will await more information from coordinator.
Hey, if I come up to this gathering of kindred souls will someone please show me how to cast this bamboo rod of mine? It is a made from scratch blank, 5’2" 2 piece, 1 tip, 5wt that is lightning fast! I tend to like slower rods so this thing has been a challenge for me. I love the rod but need someone to watch me cast it.
BigDaddy, It’s obvious that Ed was showing Gene the size of the fish he caught and Gene was replying that he and Ed Mauer catch those sized fish all the time!! I know Chris supplied that bottle of Tullemore Dew and I also know it was empty after only 2 trips around the table. I know the next morning Phil missed breakfast and I literally had to shake him awake. Actually I do not remember what we were talking about and I’m sticking to that story!
