Our Wolrd, REALLY needs HELP!? (not FF)

A children?s story based on the tale of the Three Little Pigs was rejected for an award after judges became concerned that it would offend Muslims, the Times of London reported.

The animated virtual book for primary school children, The Three Little Cowboy Builders, was also criticized for its potential to offend builders.
The row centered on the Bett awards, which were supported by Becta, the Government?s technology agency for schools. The judges? remarks, reported on the education technology Web site Merlin John Online, included: ?Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?
?The idea of taking a traditional tale and retelling a story is fine, but it should not alienate parts of the workforce. Judges would not recommend this product to the Muslim community in particular.? (end quote)

I, guess, what caught my eye on this article from the London Times, was… With all the REAL problems, we face, daily in this world and with all the troubled youth, here and abroad… there are actually real,(and supposedly up till now, “educated”??), people out there that can find time, spend money and get such things started, all in the name of “being politically correct”, instead of doing something USEFUL for children!?!

Perhaps, this is yet ANOTHER example/reason, that a child can longer bring a Bible to his/her public school, but yet, they are given one, in prison just for the asking.

I also heard using the term; “bring home the bacon” has now been replaced with: “where’s the beef?”

Porky Pig is now known as “Harry Hummus”

The Dr. Suess classic; “Green Eggs & Ham” has been retitled: “Green Eggs & Couscous”

And Miss Piggy is now referred to Miss Pilaf-ie

It’s all crazy and all wrong!

I think I’m going to have a ham sandwch for lunch…

yeah. just at school you run into absurd “politically correct” BS all the time. ive just about given up hope on people actually retaining a sound mind and putting IMPORTANT problems FIRST. nowadays people are all just worried about “hurting peoples feelings” and so the people and now sadly the government alot of times try to avoid that at all costs. and the thing is, its impossible to never offend anybody, because as long as people have different opinions, people are going to express them and someones going to get their feelings hurt. we shouldnt have to even try and make everything PC and just use common courtesy. if someone accidentaly offends someone, rather than getting all worked up about it, people need to just realize that it was an accident. you dont see people suing each other for bumping in a crowded hallway(though we probably will pretty soon) so why get all worked up over whats pretty much just the verbal form of that. and then a lot of people get all offended and feel very strongly about things they think they know about, but in reality know almost nothing about.
so thats my rant, i could go on for hours but im going to cut it short. also, im really glad that from what ive seen, we dont have any of the PC people on FAOL. thats another thing i love about this sight.

Bamboozle, you left out a few…“politically correct items”…
Like, when the city wants to work on the sewer system, they first, have to remove the “People Hole Cover”, to gain access. Women, when reaching a certain age in life, must suffer through a physical phase, called; “Humopause”.
“No one, is lesser than”. We are only “challenged” in certain areas. Like, for ME, I’m not “bald”… I’m…“folliclely challenged”. If a change must be made, in an existing set of rules, then the new change has been; “Peopledated” into law.

On an even, perhaps, “sadder note”, (except, perhaps for the happy students that attend the college), a local university, just outside Portland Oregon near where I live, made a change in their “campus rules” for the new school year, this year.

BECAUSE the women’s rights groups, on campus were able to raise such a ruckus about “true equality”, on campus, and concerning all “campus life”… to the point of actually taking their issues to the “see you, in court!”, level, there are NOW, in each of the universities many buildings, a “CO-ED BATHROOM”, for those that wish “to be equal in every way” may use, if they care to.

Yep, let’s worry about “REAL PROBLEMS”, like these, instead of the “lesser ones”, shall we?

{Quote}as long as people have different opinions, people are going to express them and someones going to get their feelings hurt.

Heyyyyy! I’m a “people”! Are you saying I’m going to get my feelings hurt, just because I have differing opinions? I’ve never been so insulted in my life! We multi-opinioned people will rise up in protest against this obviously bigoted opinion, that we will be offended, just because we hold more than one opinion. Keep this up, and I will report you to Nancy P., and the Political Correct Police!

{Quote}also, im really glad that from what ive seen, we dont have any of the PC people on FAOL. thats another thing i love about this sight.

Heyyyyy! What about me? Just because I took you out of context doesn’t mean you didn’t say it! So there!:stuck_out_tongue: I’m going to take this straight to the top. Wait’ll Edward K and Harry R. hear about this.

(Ya can’t win, so don’t bother)

My thoughts on “political correctness” are pretty simple…Most proponents of political correctness I know simply do not trust other’s intentions…mainly because they themselves cannot be trusted. Let’s “can” the cutesy English & go back to…“Actions speak louder than words” & practice the Golden Rule.

yeah i can.
i did not mean to offend you, but if i did i apologize.
(haha i do win.)

but thats basically how it should be. people just need to use common courtesy and be understanding and we wont have these problems

Think what you may, but speak only if you can afford a lawyer:rolleyes:

“Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

Littlebrook, if you came up with that one on your own, you are a certified genius:idea: I’ve never seen it stated more clearly.

ive heard that saying before somewhere. cant remember where though

My wife might agree that, at times, I’m certifiable, but not as a genius.

It’s not mine. Sorry, I don’t remember where I read it but it tickled my semi-serious funnybone enough that I saved it. Seemed appropriate.

Bill

Littlebrook,
Regardless the authorship of your borrowed quote, thanks for posting it. It is not often that so few words convey so much wisdom.

So I am a bit confused. Are we fly fisherman and fisherwoman or fisherpersons or fishy people??

Does it really matter?

Dr Bob

No Doc and that was, basically, the point of my post!! I DOESN’T MATTER, ONE WIT, but sadly to say, there evidently ARE folks out there, that seem to THINK IT MATTERS, to the degree, stated in my quote above.
Obviously, people too… that have way too much time on their hands, and/or, are not educated well enough to REALLY delve into and help mankind with truly "meaningful and serious problems, that currently plague mankind the world over.
We have a member in our local fly club, that wants our club’s entire charter re-written, so the words currently in use… “Fly Fishermen” and “Flyfisherwomen”, be changed so it reads “Fly Fisherperson” and “Fly Fisherpersons”. Her, “reasoning” is based on the argument of… “THAT way, there’s NO “gender bias” and every one is “equally” thought of!” (I won’t print here, what and how SHE is thought of).
I, guess, I’m not bright enough to possibly understand, and/or, see the differences and why is should even matter!?!
We have a few members here on FAOL that given their FAOL screen name, you’d have no idea, whatsoever, if they are “fisherMEN”, or, “fisherWOMEN” and yet I see them equally respected and their advice and knowledge, readily accepted or even argued against, but with the same respect afforded all members of this site.
You got it, right, Doc… “DOES IT, really matter?”

Flybinder, tell your “friend” that it should be “fly fishers” or “fly anglers” and that changing the charter to fly fisher PERSON is nothing short of being a speciesest and you are NOT going to tolerate that sort if bigotry! (Stamp your foot.)

Then roll your eyes. Or just add a little amendment to your charter that specifically includes all folks who fly fish and are Good Sports.

(If I am wrong in being a touch exasperated, I shall, quite sincerely, sit quietly at the MI Fish-In and listen to dissenting opinions and explanations from the assembled… honestly and without sarcasm. My friends are more important than the semantics of the thing.)

I’m still missing something…how does this offend members of the Muslim faith? I see that it has something to do with pigs, which I understand are seen as unclean by Muslims (in my very limited understanding, admittedly) but I don’t really see how that’s insulting…

Then again, as has already been said…it doesn’t really matter, now does it.

but now for the paradox part. because if they were to change it to flyanglers or flyfishers to include ALL creatures that fly fish, we might offend the group of people that believe they are superior to all other creatures, or the cultures that believe that men are superior to women by grouping them together as equals. and we cant POSSIBLY offend THEM. so what to do?..
…i know. just GET ARRID of all this politically correct BS and just use common courtesy. if someone still gets offended, they can get over it. it wasnt intentional so they need to stop and 1. untangle their shorts 2. think for a second and 3. GET THE H**L over it and move on with their life. life is to short to waste mad or stressed out over stupid stuff the whole time.
