Ott-Lite?

I’m considering one for both tying and indoor photography. Opinions or alternatives are much appreciated. thanks, Bruce

Bruce, they are a great tying light. True color, almost shadowless, and bright enough to see the smallest wraps. My wife and I both use OTT-Lites for tying.

For photography, not the best in the world. I have better luck with a couple of 60 watt house lamps and adjusting the color balance witih my digital camera. If your using a film camera, buy bulbs that are color balanced for film.

The Ott Lite is what we use for some of the photography we do here, especially the flies.
Al Campbell also used one.

I bought a couple of 75 watt fluorescent ( spiral bulb type) Sunlight bulbs at walmart today, 2 for $9 and going to give them a try first. Only problem so far is that they are pretty long and stick out from the end of the desk light shade, hmnn. Much whiter light however and may be perfect for my overhead track lighting. Also very efficient and supposed long lasting. Many thanks for the input.

I love the light from my Ott Lite for tying. For my latest photographs (shameless plug for http://www.dmaluso.photosite.com][/url:e0481] I’ve been using an Ott Lite above and worklights on either side. Worklights are 60watt in aluminum work shades.

Ott lites are no doubt pleasant to use for tying, but they are rather over-hyped in terms of their color performance. I work in the area of color imaging, and we use a quality measure of color illumination called the Color Rendering Index. Wikipedia has an article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index[/url:d326c] One might think that Ott Lite would be flaunting this number for their products. Well you won’t find any mention of it on their web site, http://www.ottlite.com/[/url:d326c] and that’s because while it’s not awful, it’s not particularly good. Someone else–a competitor who does cite Ott Lite’s CRI number is at http://www.fullspectrumsolutions.com/cri_explained.htm[/url:d326c]

Diane, your link shouldn’t have the ] at the end.

I found these at BigLot for 30 bucks for floor standing and 25 for table top.
