Other hobbies

Being somewhat inspired by Chris Chin’s thread on our handles, I’d like to ask everyone what other hobbies you enjoy aside from fishing and tying. I know many folks have placed some personal info on their profiles, but I’m interested to see whether the majority are artistic, intellectual, athletic, or otherwise inclined.

What keeps you from going nuts when the snow is blowing horizontal and there’s ice on the firewood?

I enjoy playing guitar, and painting watercolors.

So, what do you do?

When the snow is blowing, I love to cross country ski. I will occaisionally snow shoe and go into the woods and look for clues about the animals that live there and how they live. (scat, tracking etc).

I also make picture frames and do some matting.

Lastly I make it my job to harrass and embarass D.Micus every chance I get. Fortunately its not to hard to accomplish this (Love ya Dave)

Woodworking for me. We, wife son and I have been lucky enough to build a real log cabin near Yosemite, now that it is near done we have a woodshop setup in the garage and find my troubles just go away when I get a chance to be there with my family…

Thanks for asking…

Take care!

I like to look for arrowheads in freshly plowed corn fields after a light rain. My Grandmother on my fathers side was a full blooded Mohawk and this somehow ties me to the past.

For not much longer due to advancing age, Judo and Racquetball. I also golf but that’s too docile.
The nice thing about being “older” in these pursuits is the lowered expectations of opponents.
Someone once told me " if you don’t use it you lose it".

I’d rather be in Wyoming!

COOKIN’!!
Grilling (corn’s GREAT grilled), cooking brisket/ribs/pork on my watersmoker, deep frying turkeys & bluegill, chili, buffalo wings (& other variations), chicken 'n dumplings, apple pie, & of course my peanut butter fudge. Jerkey is next…got the equipment.
As you can see, I’m HEAVY into health foods!!. …crazy part is, my Doc says I’m a medical miracle with the stuff I eat!..I’m healthy as a horse!!

You mean there is something besides fly fishing and tying?

I’m also a wood worker, building some cabinetry and custom furniture, but mostly I make drums. Everything from small hand drums to large Pow Wow and ceremonial drums.

I’m also a Pow Wow singer/drummer, and sing some ceremonial songs as well.

Several of us work with in the prison system to take the drums and songs in to Native American prisoners, along with some of the old stories and tradions.

I also spend time with some of the veterans returning from Iraq that are having problems.

That pretty much keeps me off the streets and out of the pool halls.

Well YOU ask I sew.ALOT near seamstress level (yes I am a man)quilt sew embrodrey knit crochet ect. Got a neighbor wearing one of my gowns in May when her betrothed gets home from Iraq.
Had to do something couldn’t find a shirt to fit Got 3 wedding dresses to my credit and made my own vest.

Stained glass artist, but I kinda retired from that for a while (took away from flyfishin’). All my work was original, from drawings I did.
Here lately, I’ve gotten interested in the propagation of palm trees, and have begun growing high-end palm trees from seed for future resale (in five years or so). And my yardwork is another hobby, I suppose. (Jeese, looking back over my response, no wonder I ain’t got time to fish)

skiing–perfect metaphor for my life–going downhill fast.

and, jed, i know the opposite of love is indifference. i feel the love.

Amateur Astronomy and Birding go nicely with Flyfishing. Sometimes you can enjoy 2 at a time and on rare occasions during a high country float trip you get to do all three in a day. When the weather is bad you can enjoy all three from your armchair! Life is as good as you make it!

I don’t have much time for hobbies, but I manage to work in:

Hunt: birds, turkeys, waterfowl, deer (long bow), artifacts, ginseng

Fish with everything up to and including bow. Love icefishing as much as flyfishing.

Pitch some horsehoes. Bicycle. Blow the harmonica a little. Cross country ski. Keep some bird dogs. Put on fishing seminars.

In my spare time I write a little and take a few pictures.

I like fish and plants. I spend a good deal of time going to different arboretums, public gardens, and aquariums. I have a few fish tanks that I always have my hands in changing and cleaning.

I also love to ice-fish. There is no greater thrill than seeing a flag pop and running over to it and pulling a mysterious creature through the hole that you don’t know what it is until you get it up. Some of my largest fish have come through the ice.

Who has time for stress when there are fish to catch.

Hunt, hike, travel, exercise (so that I can do the other things), cross country & down hill ski, training my 4th Labrador retriever, build flyrods, ride mountain bike - been doing this for years but stepped it up when I gave up coaching football after 30 years. Now if I could only retire early so that I could do more of the above!

Garden in the summer. Biking during the time the snow is off. Jogging all year.
Also crochet alot and can knit passably.
I read alot, three to four books a week.

Needless to say bothering my wife is probably the largest hobby, according to her.

Rick

when the snow is blowing like that, I may be inclined to pick up one of those other rods and chase fish.
I also hunt.
I’m learning guitar, just started, so that should keep me busy this winter.
I also do puzzles. Find one I like, put it together, glue and frame it.
I read a lot, fiction and fishing/hunting - and play rugby, but its pretty much nonexistent in the winter.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - “WOW-What a Ride!”
Don’t take life too seriously, you’ll never get out alive.

I hike a lot, crosscountry ski when I can.
Mushrooming; the best excuse there is for walking aimlessly in the woods.
I have a 215 year old house that requires a lot of work. That’s what I should be doing right now.

Hey MOturkY,

While flyfishing is my favorite, I

enjoy woodworking and kayaking also. When
I can combine all three such as in my
treehouse projects, I’m in heaven.G I
built one on a prime South Carolina paddling
trail that was a real joy. Hundreds of
folks have stayed there over the years and
the reports have been complementary. I’m
currently designing some new ones for the
Berkeley Blueways paddle trails program.
It’s a lot of fun and this time I have a
decent budget and a work crew.G Warm
regards, Jim

Anything aviation (includes model rockets), hunting, ice fishing, reading, wood working, hiking, tinkering with computers and cars. Heck, I’ll try just about anything once. If I like it I add it to my list.

Eric “nighthawk”

It’s a great day for fly fishing!

When the ice forms on the ponds and lakes, it’s time to drag out my portable shelter and go ice fishing. Although it does take some creativity casting inside one of those things. G
