Orvis Zero G 5wt

I stumbeld on the Orvis Zero G in 5wt mid flex for sale on their web site for $185 regulrly $625. I have one of their cheaper models that is pretty good so I thought I should grab it even though I have never cast it. Won’t be able to get out with it for a while. Does anyone have it or have tried it? What do you think of it?

Hey Joe,
So I RAN to their web site and could NOT find THE deal.

Mark

I picked up a 9’ 9wt Zero G last summer at half price, worth it at nearly TWICE the price you found! I can cast that thing all day long in the salt or for the big flatheads we target on the James in early summer.

If you can, definitely snatch it. Then, in a year or two, should you “accidentally” bust it, you’ll probably have it replaced with a Helios. Not that I’d ever advocate it…just sayin.

I’d like to know how you catch those flatheads, like what flies you use, time of day, type of retrieve, where you find them, etc. We have flatheads up here too but I’ve never heard of anybody catching them on the fly. That would be awesome!
And just so this post isn’t too far off topic I too say snap up the Zero G. I got a 4 wt on sale last year and would agree it’s a great rod!

According to the website they are not available. Might want to check at a local dealer/Orvis store.

And we all wonder why high end rod are so pricey…

Brad

We get them in late spring through mid-summer when they move up just beyond the fall line to spawn and then feed until the water comes back up. Typically a 7-9wt rod, 15’ sink-tip (type 6 or type 8) and weighted articulated bunny leeches in black or gray/natural; I tie them with a weedguard since there are so many rocks and sticks around, plus it elimintaes a lot of foul-hooked fish. Retrieve is slow strip, but sometimes you can sight-fish them. Time of day usually makes little difference with these big breeders. They like deeper water with slight current.

Re: Zero G’s. I saw three or four at our local Orvis shop well below half-price. Might have to pick up another, despite the fact that I’m not particularly fond of Orvis gear. At that price you can’t get a better deal.

If you see a 9’ 5wt 4 pc., MUST be a 4pc, let me know. I’d like to get a 5wt to take to Colorado. I have 2 but they are both 2 pc. Even a 6 wt might be OK in a 4pc.

Let me know if the deal is real!
I found one on eBay but I can guarantee that price will jump a lot before the final minutes.

That’s one hell of a rod. I LOVED it. I tried it out several times and can only hope that one day they market the blanks. It’s out of my price range as it is today, however. Its a very nice rod. It’s a fast rod that doesn’t feel like a broom stick. I liked it a lot more than the Helios. Then it all comes down to casting styles and feel YOU want.

Sounds like I did okay. I checked back after getting this one and there were no more available on line. There were two available in 5wt at the Manchester VT store last I checked; those interested might want to call them. Can’t wait to try it.

You wouldn’t happen to have the no. to the VT. store would you?

Dave

Dave the phone number for the Manchester Vermont store is: 802-362-3750

Thanks CJ.
