Orvis Rod

My friend bought an Orvis 8 1/2" 2pc 5wt and an Orvis reel that says Maddison on it. New condition.
He wants to sell it, but has no idea what price to put on it. Can anyone help. Bought about 1990.

Madison is a bamboo rod designation is it not?

The reel is maddison.

I had an Orvis Madison reel years ago, it was $29 new I believe.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I haven’t been over to see the rod, I guess I should take a picture. I think it’s a low end package.
He thought about learning to fly fish and wasn’t too sure and didn’t want to start with a $500 rod.
I tried to teach him, but it was hopeless, two left hands.

Email or call Orvis. They’ll tell you all you need to know and then some. Very helpful folks.

krausebb, do you know if the ROD, is cane or not?

It’s not cane.

Then what good is it ?

My guess is that, if purchased as a package, the rod is likely a Rocky Mountain or Green Mountain series. The 8.5’ 5# models would have been built on the same blank as the Superfine Henry’s Fork, but featured downgraded hardware. The Rocky Mountain was a mid-price rod and the Green Mountain was entry level. Without pulling out old catalogs … I think the R.M. sold new for about $250.00 and the G.M. for $125.00. The Madison reel had two incarnations, the earlier being a branded Pflueger and the more recent was the predecessor to the current Clearwater reel. My first graphite rod was a Rocky Mountain 8’ 6# “Trout” model, which I purchased as a package with a Madison reel.

Thanks krausebb. I think Orvis did make a Madison cane rod. Obviously, not the one in question.

I bought 2 Madisons back about 1990 and they were $50.

Ah, but what a nice rod…but you already knew that, didn’t you
