Opal X SBS

Mark Martin’s variation on a classic. Made a few changes to my usual bullethead sequence, trying out a “double hull” idea for a bit more floatation.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - UTC 140 tan
body - Mylar medium opalescent
rib - wire x-small silver
wing - calf tail white
legs - rubber medium barred
indicator - foam
head/collar - deer hair

Part 1

Mash down barb and attach thread at head (gap width); finish thread at the back end

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of deer hair; trim to length

2 soft loops, then a steady pull to spin it around the shank

push the hair back, work the thread through to the hook eye

pull the hair forward, then again with the 2 soft loops; hold on to the deer hair while you tighten and it’ll flare in place

cross-wrap back over (if you want a slimmer head, take a few wraps through it to compress), trim butts

Part 2

tie in rib

tie in tinsel; wrap down bend and back

counter-wrap rib; tie off, helicopter

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of calf tail; tie in, trim butts

push the deer hair back, make sure it’s distributed evenly around the head

one last time with the 2 soft loops, pull tight

Part 3

legs

add indicator, whip, SHHAN; a dose of thinned Goop on the head improves durability

trim out hair underneath, trim legs; go fish

dorsal

semi-ventral
