Oops

The short rod that fit through the hole and held it together broke, now I “have to” get a new vise.
Any good ones for around 60$? Rotary vise would be a big bonus too.

Oh, golly! That’s just way too bad!! Oh well … some times you just gotta do what you just gotta do!

Man! I hate it when excuses, uh, “Things” like that happen!

I have the following vise:
Supreme Rotating Fly Tying Vise

It was very inexpensive, and has been very good for me. The reviews for it are not great, but I have not had any issues with it at all. I have tied a few hundred flies ranging from size 22 dry flies all the way up to 2/0 heavy saltwater streamers.

It ships coated in oil, so you will want to give it a good cleaning before you start tying with it.

You may be able to get a Danvise in that price range. I really like mine. The only thing preventing me from tying BETTER flies…is me.

Not long ago, you would have got danvise, danvise, danvise…

I don’t like them but a lot of folks do. Might want to take a look on EvilBay, they can be had prett? inexpensively on there.

I don’t have a whole lot of experience with vises in that price range, went from a cheapo to a Renzetti Traveler to now a Peak. But, I have tied on the Anvil Apex. Its a little more than you are looking to spend (can find them online for 75ish) but its a bulletproof setup and would last you a lifetime. Otherwise, if you have a Gander Mtn close by, they had Griffin Odyssey cam vises marked down to 99 then 50% off of that at least locally. Might be worth a look

Hahaha beat me to it Dave!

How in the…?

Oh well, no matter. Clearly a new vise is in order.

Check out this site for <$150 vise reviews. One of the best I’ve seen:

He had to work at it VERY, very hard!! Do you have any idea how long it took him to poke that pin out, to make it look accidental???

When I was first asking folks (here and elsewhere) about an inexpensive rotary vice, I was pointed at this one.

The vice above is $85, so higher than you asked for, but the reviews seem positive. I have no idea about it myself. I ended up being given an old-school Thompson vice, and have since decided that when I upgrade, I’m going with a Peak vice which has a higher price tag (around $150).

 Yes I’m sure there aren’t any witnesses to the act…left. :stuck_out_tongue:

You’ll love the Peak Jeff!

I am currently using this one from Jann’s Netcraft, if you saw my flies you might not consider that a recommendation but I have been fairly happy.

I previously had this one, both can be used as rotary vises, the one below doesn’t have the arm to hold your thread.

What a monster that “Orvis” vise is. I don’t see how you can tie a fly with all that hardware beneath your left hand. My thoughts are: Peak for larger flies or a Renzetti Traveler for smaller stuff. Go for the extra $100 for either. You’ll be glad you did.
I have both and am very happy.

Actually, it was the fact that quite a few folks here were raving about the Peak vise that made me take a good look at it. I haven’t heard much of any complaints and they all seem to be minor.

A guy i know on another fishing site ties spey flies with his peak. He said he gets the occasional wobble with his (cant remember if it was the big flies or the little ones). Overall, I dont think anyone would be disappoint by any vise from about $75 on up…its just finding one that suits your style.

For me, Regal does it. For others, who knows.

I love my Apex Anvil cost is 100.00 at Bass Pro

Great Review page. Thanks for the info. It was definitely worth the read.

I rather like the apex anvil, the option of clamp or pedastal is a neat feature.
But it all depends on whether I gain or lose and money.

Glad you liked it. They also have a similarly great review of a bunch of 2wt rods.
