On line fly tying videos

One of the reasons I like the board is the information others are willing to share. Often, people include links to other websites with fly recipes, instructions, etc. when answering questions. I’ve added lots of those links to my “favorites” pull down menu.

I ran across this website earlier today.

http://kwsu.org/Offers/FlyTying.aspx

It appears this public television station in Washington (State) offers a half hour fly tying program and has placed the shows on line. I haven’t had a chance to view any of the videos yet. Each episode covers three flies. I think the program has been on for three or four years.

Anyone familiar with this show?

Phishtales

When I first started fly fishing, but before I started fly tying, I used to catch this show every once in a while. Doesn’t seem to be on anymore in Chicago.

I’ve run across this website and enjoy it. Recently tied the antelope mouse (my first shot at a mouse pattern - I spin well but cut ugly) from LeRoy’s instructions.

Hey, Phish.
I’m a devotee. I’ll go back and watch a few videos when I need to study a technique. Last trip it was upright and divided wings. Next time, who knows.

Hey guys,
Try this one…It isn’t as extensive as the “Fly Tying, The Angler’s Art” program, but it is good. The host Greg Heister is a great tier and fisherman. Best Regards…

I think probably the best tying videos on the net…lots of differet patterns and Davie’s tying skill are top notch. I’ve learned a lot watching his video’s.

He uses a lot of Kamasan hooks (Daiichi)…a link to the equivalents.

I think is was Norn who turned me on to this a couple years ago. At the time the web site was set up differently and you needed a special (free) viewer you had to download to watch them. Which also meant the viewer had to download the files. Turns out it’s over 14 gigabytes total (or roughly 13 episodes per DVD). NOT that I know that it took 4 DVD’s to hold all these, I’m just a computer geek and ‘did the math’. Yea, that it!

Anyway here’s an index of all the shows and what patterns they tie in each episode.

it took me a looooonnnnggg time to dowload those damn videos, but well worth it!

they do play on windows media player

Mike Holt (Maine Rotary flytying) has a subscription service ($25.00 for the year). He’s a great teacher, very articulate, and the videos are nicely produced. The really good thing about his stuff is that in addition to standard and varied flies, he has a good number of instructional videos on technique. As I said, not free, but worth the price.

Yep, even with highspeed/broadband 14+ GB is a lot to download!
They do play on media player now, but they can not be saved anymore.

Some nice video thanks for the link.

Here are two more to consider that are in my favorites:

Nice video but that boy has such a heavy accent that I can’t focus on the fly tying while trying to figure out what he is saying. Looks like a nice series though.

theres some good ones and bad ones but you tube has a 1000+ tying videos

some good stuff here thnx

Phishtales, FT:TAA videos are indeed worth watching.

For the beginner tyers, theres a difference between Fly Tying videos though. Those that show you how to make a specific pattern (like FT:TAA) and instructional videos that teach you basic fly tying(Like some of DIck Talleurs etc.). “The Fly Tying: The Anglers Art” is indeed a great set of videso that demonstrates over a hundred different patterns, but they are not instructional videos that teach technique, just patterns.

Just and FYI.

I encourage you all to go to YouTube for Charlie Craven’s video, two minute parachute adams. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_XZlX0mau0.

It is an amazing feat to watch. Even better, it taught me some real time saving tips about starting the thread base and combining the wing posting with the parachute hackle tie-in. Both of these are real forehead slappers! The part showing him dubbing the thread is a great reminder that sparse is better.

I can’t tie a parachute adams in 2 minutes after watching this video. But I can tie them much better and faster than before.

I’ve been watching “Fly Tying, The Angler’s Art” for several years now. Dave Engebretsen passed away a few years ago, but Leroy Hyatt is still at it. I met Leroy at the Silver Bow fly shop in Spokane Wa. about 2 years ago. He really is that good at tying flies, and is very accommodating when it comes to helping others with tying problems. Nice fellow.
And yes, I too have that program saved to my favorites.

Agreed, do you have any techniques specific learning type videos that you can reference that are online. A complete series is what I am looking for and not a single Youtube posting. Nothing against YouTube if it is a series of tying programs. Looking for something available on the web and free and not a set of DVDs that I have to pay for. By the way, the ones you pay for- Love Dennis Potter’s DVDs through http://www.riverhouseflyco.com/

Thanks

Not sure whats available online, but if you Google “beginners fly tying videos” (and variation of such) you’ll get some to start with.

Not sure what they have available online here, but check out http://www.bennett-watt.com/Fly-Fishing/departments/1193/
These are great videos, professionally produced.

It looks like they re-did the classic “Hooked On:” series. The original was all on VHS, but they re-did them on DVD, and it the new series are all HD DVD. My local library is part of an 80+ State wide (Ohio) library consortium. All the catalogs are combined into one online. If any one library has an item, it shows in the catalog. When I reserve something, they ship it to my local library. If it’s available, I usually get an item within 3 or 4 days. I’ve watched most of the original Hooked On: series this way. And dozens of other titles over the years.

Just about every library these days is part of an Inter-Library-Loan system. If they don’t have something you’re looking for, they will try to find it for you. I tried to get a Geirach book one time that was not in the system. I asked if they could get it and about 2 weeks later they called and said it was in. They bought it from Amazon for me to read, and when I was done with it, they just added it to their inventory. How cool is that??? I dont mind waiting if it’s free!

If nothing else it’s a great “try before buy”. Theoretically Videos and DVD’s could can be copied if one was to cross over to the dark side.
