Old Mustad Hooks - Question

Does anyone have any information about the old Mustad model 3451 hooks? Label says: " “Superior Mustad-Kinsey Hooks- Marked Rustproof”. These hooks are in boxes with a gold label that says size 16, 18, appear to be old sizes and do not have eyes. They were made in Norway.

Appreciate infromation because Mustad has not responded to my inquery.

Thanks.

Allan

JC,

I emailed the customer relations department but hadn’t called. I will do that today.

Thanks.

Allan

Thanks Allan. I’m sure you have met Dr. Fish, he has the booth at all major shows. Great guy and probably has the answer. Any guess on what year they were made? I have never known them to ignore an email, maybe still looking for the answer. Whatcha gonna use them for?

JC,

I haven’t had a chance to call Mustad and yes, I’ve met Dr. Fish on several occassions.

No idea when they were made. The sizes are not indicitive of todays sizes though. So they must go back to some older standard sizing. They are nicely shaped and since they don’t have eyes I was thinking of making some older patterns on them with a short length of snelled tippet.

Just called Mustad. No information available. The service person suggested I contact the Norway office and I just did that. If and when I get a response I’ll post it. May be interesting?

Ya Allan, now you got a mystery going.

Tye,

I’ll add to the mystery, got a batch of hooks through an auction and the hooks model 90214 Mustad-kendal Round Hooks size 24 don’t have eyes either.

Emailing Dr. Fish to find out cause there’s no way to use them without eyes cause there’s no know small enough that wouldn’t dwarf the hook.

Fatman

Fatman,

Couldn’t you take about 8 inches of 6x or 7x tippet, make a loop at one end, tie the other end along the shank with thread wraps and apply a tiny drop of Crazy Glue? Then procede to tie the fly. You’ll end up with a snelled fly.

Allan

Snell it I can hardly pick them up LOL, man I’ve seen pictures of small hooks before but this is nuts LOL
