OK, I just have to brag

Although I went back to being a full time computer programmer about 4 months ago, I did take a year off to teach music and build musical instruments. I have one student in particular who’s been my mandolin student for the past 3 years and a guitar student for about a year before that. He’s also my very good friend and a member of my band, “The Sierra Swing Conspiracy”.

In any case, we finally have a video of Sean playing mandolin. I thought I’d share it with my friends here.

Enjoy

Wow, it just knocks me out, the talent some of you guys have.

Musicians are always welcome at the fish-ins. Well, maybe not those with banjos…

Well, maybe not those with banjos

Oh Ouch! I also play (and teach) banjo.

But that’s ok, I usually play guitar or mandolin in public. As they say:

Q. What’s the definition of a gentleman?

A. Somebody who can play banjo, and chooses not to.

{sold my tenor, never was worth a poop with it) (at least I didn’t ‘claw’ at the thang!!!)

The banjo joke is from several fish-ins ago…

I envy folks with musical talent. I can sing great, in the car or the shower, and that about sums up my talent. The only thing I can play is a fish.

Ok, that was kool !!!

Sean is always harassing me about my banjo. He’ll set me up for a banjo joke and I’ll just let him ride with it.

Sean: Hey Greg, how long does it take to tune a banjo?

Me: I don’t know Sean, How long?

Sean: Nobody knows!

Sean: Hey Greg. Did you know that banjo players spend half their time tuning and the other half playing out of tune?

Sean: Hey Greg, Why couldn’t the banjo player get into the nice restaurant?

Me: I don’t know Sean, Why?

Sean: They had a 4 tooth minimum.

Sometimes I turn it around on him.

Me: Hey Sean, I came home late last night and my wife hit the ceiling

Sean: Was she mad?

Me: Nope, just a lousy shot.

However, I should say that one of our continuing projects is transcribing one of Bach’s Two Part Inventions for mandolin and banjo. So I’m trying to give the instrument a little bit of class.

I always wanted to do the 1812 ovature, now Im invisioning banjo, mandolin and 12 gauge.

I know Bela Fleck has recorded some classical pieces on Banjo along with his usual Bluegrass, Jazz, etc. He’s among my favorites, along with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas… Actually, one of the most amazing performances I heard was a guy doing a promo tour for Washburn guitars… He played a solo, acoustic, fingerstyle arrangement of ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’ – Amazing.

It sounds like your student is definitely on the right path with a good teacher. I know he must be working hard on it, but even with that - he’s got a definite gift. Great job to both of you!!
