October Smallmouth . . .

Hi All,

Caught my best Smallie of the year yesterday. We ended two days of Trout fishing on the Norfork River in Arkansas by going to a nearby stream know for Smallmouth. Had a blast!

Hard to believe that with smallmouth fishing close enough to reach, you’d even bother with the trout.

But that’s just me.

I am very much a smallmouth beginner. I need to find more local places to go etc. I was with two other guys last night, both helping me out alot. Showing me where to look find them, presentation. In the end it was like smallmouth class 101.

Wayne,
Thanks for the photo and report!! I’m glad you had a good trip!
Doug

Nice smallie, what did you catch him on???

It’s called a Gitzit . . . . I believe it was developed by a local guide. I searched for pictures on the Net but can’t find any. I’ll take a photo and post it. It’s a simple pattern to tie.

wayne,
Try this fly, tied in olive. http://www.warmwaterflytyer.com/corner.asp?page=9 It worked well on the Elk River in SW Mo for smallies a few weeks ago.

biot midge–

I used to fish the Elk all the time, but it’s been several years since I’ve made it down there. Is it still pretty good? We used to use a lot of small crayfish patterns and caught a lot of smallies and decent sized goggle-eyes.

Steve,
This is a very cool fly pattern!! I love the inverted zonker strip!
Doug

bluegill,
I have fished the Elk River for over 40 years, and it is still a very good fishery. Besides the smallmouth, there are some spotted bass and a good population of several species of sunfish.

Doug,
I have been tying those ever since I watched Terry Wilson tying them at the Smallmouth Rendezvous in May of this year. They have worked well for me in olive for stream smallies, and in chartreuse for largemouth bass and crappie in ponds. I have also caught a couple of trout on them, and I suspect they would make good night flies for big browns.
