October Flame Caddis Emerger SBS

Few things I know less about than fishing flies on the swing and October Caddis, although I have seen the bugs and fished dries (unsuccessfully) for trout; cool pattern, though.

hook - Dai Riki 899 #8
thread - MFC 8/0 rusty brown
rib - small wire copper
abdomen - 2/3 orange sparkle 1/3 sulphur yellow dubbing mix
thorax - mallard flank fluff dyed rust
wing - fox squirrel tail
antennae - turkey tail fiber
hackle - furnace (unless you have access to radioactive, mutant hen of a sizeable proportion, get one of the webbiest ones you can find on the top/backside of a lower-grade rooster cape)

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, tie in rib, wrap back to point

dub thread, dub body

rib body; helicopter end and tie off

prep mallard flank; insert in clip and cut away from quill

Part 2

unwind thread to remove any twist; split with needle, insert clip, trap fluff in thread, release from clip, spin bobbin to create chenille-ish thing

stroke back fibers (wet fingers help) and wrap thorax

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of fox squirrel tail; tie in/trim butts

tie in antennae

Part 3

prep hackle, tie in by tip

stroke fibers back (again with the wet fingers), wrap hackle, tie off, trim, whip SHHAN

Scott

Excellent pattern Scott! A very fishable Northwest pattern for certain.
