Obsessive preparation for Idaho fish-in

I just went through the boxes of flies I have put together for Idaho…

77 various October Caddis CDC dries, differing sizes and dubbed bodies
3 beadhead soft hackle Octobers (hideously ugly)
7 #16 PMDs
18 (was 9) #16 mahogany duns (I hit a hatch in one pool one time)

I have a dozen or so Octobers left from last year. I have two dozen october muddlers on order, and Slic said he might sell me back the dozen I got for him a couple years back…

Found two previously unused 100 meter spools of 4x tippet and one of 5x…

Found a DT3F fly line to replace the one I broke last weekend…

Found a pair of bootlaces, might come in handy. Two pairs of wading boots on the porch right now…

Put all the caddis tying stuff in one box, and dubbing in the other box…

Know where my tent and both my sleeping bags are. Need a new air mattress, tho.

70 hours of comp time on the books. Taking 80 (Plan A) or 120 (Plan B) hours off. Can’t recall how much annual leave I have to burn up by end of year to avoid losing it, but I have seven weeks or so on the books…

Things left to do:

Oil change in truck, rotate tires. New wipers, maybe.

Find all my fly rods, reels, a couple spare lines, and collect them in one place.

Find other 43 boxes of flies and make sure I have them, just in case. If I am feeling really really bored on another Saturday, dump said boxes out on large white space and sort flies.

Add rest of possibly useful tying stuff to another box and bring it along.

I figure I need another dozen or so PMD’s (knowing I probably have at least that many in another fly box, but I will tie anyway), a dozen or so buggers for catching whitefish (again, already tied somewhere), and my collection of other little gray caddis.

Wait about three more weeks to actually leave…

Stop at Cabelas in Lehi and at least one shop in Missoula on the way…

More updates as my OCD requires! :stuck_out_tongue:

Dennis,

Don’t worry – between Cabela’s and the 5 million fly shops along the way, I think you have it covered. On the other hand, did you remember the Aqua-seal just in case there is a leak, the extra floatant, close up glasses, – Oh Oh , what am i forgetting.

Have a good trip.

Ortho.

Don’t worry Dennis if you forget anything camp wise the Hardware store in Kooskia has everything you need including sleeping bags. Not that I would know by experience.

I wish I was going to be there.

Eric

I’ve got no flies tied for myself yet and I won’t have the time to finish the rod I was building for the trip. But hey, sounds like you’ll have enough flies for me too, hehehehe.

Didn’t you mooch flies from me last time, Foo?

Bring the rod along, you can finish it in the rumpus room while I tie you some flies for the next day.

And Ortho, you remember that big green pickup of mine? I suspect it will be more full than not by the time I head north.

I might not be able to bring my rod building stuff with me, but I am going to bring my tying stuff with me because I’m pretty sure I won’t be 100% prepared by the time I show up.

10 more CDC octobers today…

found about a dozen PMDs in a backup fly box…

Tied another ten PMDs while in the chat room last night…

Took an extra week off work!..

6 more Octobers while I chatted. I think that brings the boxes up to 93 new ones for this trip… Sigh.

I wish I could be as good as you…

QK it helps to have not gone fishing in recent memory :(. The flies add up when I don’t leave them in the trees each day. And tying while I live in the chat room each night is easy. I am, however, running out of good CDC from last winter’s ducks. Early season opens when I am in Idaho, too. Sigh.
