This caught my attention on the Orvis website. The only thing I know that looks like the body material is craft foam, which I would not think would work. Does anyone have an idea on what material is used for the body?
You are correct- craft foam- a thin tapered strip. Don’t know exactly what type, but a floating foam would make for a slow-sinking nymph at best.
… ties a pretty neat ( salmonfly ) stonefly nymph using tapered bicycle tire inner tube strips for the body that have a very similar look. But those are pretty good size flies, larger, I would guess, than the one you show.

John, thats exactly what i thought, Bob told me thats what he started making his stone flies from. a couplr bucks and you have a lifetime supply
Razor foam if its foam, and nymph stretch skin if its a latex.
Nymph stretch skin is fun!! Also can use a surgical glove (non powdered).
Foam wrapped tight will not float (very well) it sinks slowly in the water which would be great for this Nymph, I could not find a picture on the Orvis site could you link it plse…
It was not easy to find but I saved the name of the fly on the image; they order it in size 10 - 14.
Betty, try the single finger gloves. The latex is a bit thicker than the full gloves. Still not as thick as NSS, but easier to work with and not tear than the regular gloves.
They state that it is an emerger, so I would think it is Foam stretched…

Okay, I’m thinking thin strip of craft foam stretched over underbody of lead wire, pheasant tail legs and dark dubbed head. Do you concur or have edits to added?

I would rather tie it than buy it but I am curious about the note at the bottom of Orvis’s page about not being able to ship outside of the USA ,any idea why?
Your guess is as good as mine, I missed that note. I didn’t have the beads of the size shown but making subsitution suitable to me I turned out my first one a couple of minute ago. I used a strip from a water bottle koosie.
These are poor imitations but I worked with the materials at hand. I used gold tinsel on one and copper wire on the other. I did not have beads of the size indicated in the Orvis photo so I color a pearl bead with a red felt tip and omited the clear. I cut strips off a water bottle koozie (soft flexible foam) and used a dark brown buggy dubbing.
You guys are probably correct about the foam…my first glance was that the material was a thin suede leather or dyed chamois product.
Is that perhaps the new material called Fly Paper?
