NY'ers Practice for Pa Fish In

The day dawned foggy and cool at 32F. The weatherman said hi of 55 and sunny for the forecast. Sped off to meet Evil Phil at a prime Western NY location. Arrived late due to the fog from last night’s rain then drop in temp. Phil was waiting and rigged. This would be my first time out for Inland trout since last July and I was chomping at the bit to pop the cherry on at least one of several new acquired toys since my last outing. Day started slow for me as I later learned Phil was popping them from the get go but he went down and I went up. As the fog finally was burning off I managed to find a bit of a rythym, even if it took constantly changing fly combinations to keep it going.

My best of the day at 14"

The action slowed for the afternoon, but in the warm sunshine who really cares. Even heard one loud unmistakeable “Slurp” during a very heavy hatch of small black stoneflies. I really hate it when they crawl all over the back of my neck! Only 5 weeks to the Pa Fish In and plenty more time to Practice!

Nice! Glad to see you getting out and about. What do you think of that CPS (I KNOW you were using that)?

Your little fly box sitting in front of me has the perfect fly to immitate those stoneflies in it. The Z man and I were out two weeks ago and smacked 'em but good on those flies. Gene has finally “bonded” with his Z-Axis, and the fish are paying the price.

BTW - One would think you’d know how to spell “Rhythm” with all the reminders you’re getting now.

Take care brother - we’re gonna have a field day in Waterville!

Is it May yet?

Actually Ed the CPS stayed in the case! Would have been a bit in the way as that creek is only 18-20 feet wide in the section we were fishing. Funny you should mention it, Phil and I were talking about a bigger creek to give the CPS a chance to lose it’s virginity on. Maybe next week. The rod I broke in today was an 8’ 4wt Cortland Brook rod. Those little rods are way under rated! I fell in love with that rod when I saw one at McConnells in Waterville last year and it kept nagging at me all winter until I finally gave in and got one! Glad I did. It may end up being the rod I reach for a lot as most of my fishing is on the smaller streams as I can get out after work most any day and be on the water in 20mins. Glad to hear you and Gene are getting out, but I’m sorry to hear he has bonded with the Z. I was planning on offering a 50 and bringing it back from Waterville with me!

It was late and my arms were aching from landing all those browns is the reason I misspelled rhythm!
