Number of Posts

It seems as though those of us who have a comparitivley low number of posts here and on forums in general simply get passed by. I’ve noticed that in threads, people’s comments who have low post numbers get dismissed as a nuisance instead of a valid comment that may actually have some value.
Maybe this is my own self-consciousness, but it seems to be quite wide-spread on almost every discussion board out there.

So…what are your thoughts? Do you tend to pay more attention to those with 3,000 posts than you do to those with 3 posts? Be honest now…
P.S. If I don’t get any answers to this question, then that will be answer enough for me.

Simple answer “NO”

Seldom even notice the # of posts…frankly I think # of posts only means being an active member a long time…like Bobby Knight says his # of wins means he’s been coaching for a long time…

My …posts / day… I think are pathetic…should be out fishing…

I never pay attention to it…NEVER

Hi,
I think there probably is a wee bit of that, but it’s normal. If you go to a party, and there are people there you know and those you do not, most people tend to converse more with those they already know. After someone has posted for awhile, people get a better feel for who the poster is and what sort topics they like to discuss. It’s the “getting to know you” phase.

However, I doubt anyone checks the number of posts directly. It’s just it takes a number of posts before people get to know you well.

Rarely notice # of posts Wild One.

Wild One,

I cannot answer for anyone else, but, for me, I never look at how many posts anyone has. I could not tell you how many posts I have made. I will read just about all the posts that are made and I may or may not respond. Some posts I do not have any experience with the person’s question on equipment or their requests and so I just read everyone else’s posts and never respond. I try to only respond to the questions that I have some knowledge on. Some posts do not require any comments like those who are just thanking someone or commenting on a vendor’s good service. You can also look at a post subject and to the right of it there is a number telling you how many people have read it and there not be any posts. A lot of people just lurk and read and take from the other posts that are made what they were looking for and you never know they are there. If I have a “gut” feeling that someone’s post is made just to “stir the pot” I stay out of it. I do not need that.

So, I think you may be wrong in your thoughts. At least I hope you are because I cannot live without FAOL to go to everyday and I think there are a great bunch of people here. If there are a few bad apples, they are way out numbered with good people with the desire to help others. I know that JC and LF are two very fine people and I will defend them at all cost.

Wild One, stay with us because we need good people like yourself.

Now, let’s go fishing!

Wild One,
I have always been a detail person. I also am curious and thinking is important to me. One thing I don’t want to be is paranoid.
Each person has different motives with their posts and sometimes we get the response we want and sometimes we don’t.
I want to echo what someone else said, KEEP POSTING!
You never know what you will learn.
Sometimes I look at profiles, but NOT for number of posts.
Doug

WOW, you need to see someone… soon.

“Look out, the paranoids are coming!”

Number of posts doesn’t matter a hoot to me. If I do not feel comfortable about a topic or giving advice then I do not post.

IMO, my fly tying and fishing skills aren’t that great. There are many others here better suited to give advice than me. I tend to try and help in the personal and spiritual aspect.

Keep your chin up and keep posting here. We like having you here and if you were not welcome here you would know it by now.

I’m guilty. I look. I am new to FAOL. I ask a lot of questions, give some answers if I have an opinion but like DShock, it’s just to learn a little about the person. I am trying to make friends, sight unseen, so it’s just a way to learn a little more about the person and their interests.

If I see a name I don’t recognize I look out of curiosity. The only time I would look at not number of posts, but how long the person has been registered is if they have somthing to sell I am real nervous about newbies here and on ebay.

Eric

I’ll roll with the crowd on this one too.
I tend to read all of the posts here , at least a little way into them.
If they spark my interest then I read all the way through.
If I have a thought that I think may add to the thread then I’ll take a "cast’ at the waters.
The majority of folkes here all seem to be of at least one common sort.
I’ll put a name on it.
Well mannered and thinking.
Cheers

JC, If this was for me, I’M WAYYYYYYY!!! ahead of you!
I would like to add a note.
JC has mentioned that it would be nice if more people would supply more info on their profiles. I suppose the # of posts are sort of important, but what I look at is the date of registration.
I would appreciate knowing more about people from their profiles, but I’ve given up expecting people to fill out every category.
Hopefully this person won’t get mad at me, but there is a member that filled out in their profile that they were a Rocket Scientist.
Of course I thought he was pulling my leg and when I sent him a PM, it turns out he is one.
So fill out your occupation (EVEN IF YOUR A ROCKET SCIENTIST) It makes it enjoyable for everyone.
Doug

Like you WO I’m a new member too. I’ve found folks to be very welcoming and helpful. And the expertise on the board is amazing.

I’ll confess to checking out profiles occassionally if there’s something about the poster’s question or response that seems interesting. But I don’t respond based on numbers of posts. My responses are based on whether or not I think I have anything meaningful to add, or to offer up encouragement to a self-identified newbie or kid.

I can’t speak to your experience on this or other boards, but I’m sure that some of the active posters do get a lot of traffic to their own posts by virtue of the friendships they’ve made on-line, breaking bread together at FishIns etc. and as “repayment” for their helpfulness to others in the past. Isn’t that a good thing?

Sorry if you felt your posts were ignored or didn’t get the responses you were looking for, but I certainly don’t think that was intentional dissing based on # of posts— I don’t think folks on this board keep score. Just my $.000002.

The only time I check the number of posts is when I see a name I dont recognize trying to sell something.

Hey Doug,

I loved the Rocket Science guy…forget who it is but it was fun replying one time that what he asked “wasn’t rocket science” …he was a good sport…

When there is a new thread or a new post , I read it . Then if its something that I am particularly interested in for whatever reason. I may look to see who wrote it. Usually not.

The idea that people on this board would only read posts by well known posters strikes me as very funny. Why would anyone go to all that trouble?

If the post is ignored for the most part I think it probably had little merit in the first place.

I have posted several things on here that were totally ignored and some that got lots of reactions.

I Never look to see someones post total except on one occasion. That was when there was an obvious troll in chat one night. He had just joined and had no profile or posts to his name. He threatened to ban all 11 other posters in chat that night. He disapeared the next day.

Wild One,
I have more than 3,000 posts & NOBODY listens to me!!

Seriously, I’m with Terry on this. I check # of posts & profile when I see posts on the “for sale” board by names I don’t recognize. You’ll be fine. The more you post, & the more FAOLers you meet, the more comfortable you will feel. Now let’s get together & do some fly fishing!
Mike

WildOne…I’m curious …

How do you decide when you are being ignored?

Wild One, RW here

You might be on to something. You’ve got to always remember that just because you’re paranoid don’t mean they ain’t after you…
