Not Happy!!

Not really feeling this pattern:

Wayne

I don’t think the fish will be too happy with it either when you pull them out of the water with it stuck in their mouths. What aren’t you happy with? Just me but I’d tie the tail a bit shorter and maybe reverse the direction the hackle is oriented; minor stuff, though. It’ll definitely catch fish.

Scott

Trade the hot pink for black nickel, turn the hackle over, and I could catch a fish on that.

Yeah I wasn’t feeling the pink cone head, silver or brass, but that would catch fish as is i bet.

Oh, there’s places where pink, orange, chartreuse cones have worked just fine for me, and I’m a poor streamer fisherman.

Scott

I’d say try it with either a black cone or a silver one, then mix a little krystal flash into the tail. It has the makings of a really great fly.

Get a red marker and paint the head red and take it fishing and ask them what they think…

You’re not feeling it because it’s in the vise.

Take it out of the vise, put it in your hand, and you will be able to feel it just fine ;).

I seldom fish 'buggers anymore, but I think that one will catch fish as is. I like the extra motion you get from the hackle slanting forward, and pink is the new red as far as bead/cone head colors go.

Buddy.

I like it. Most of my flies have longer tails. I like them better.
Also llike the way the feather is. I think it gives more movment.

Is the tail Ostrich?

As a fish catcher, and especially for bass or steelhead, I have no concerns about this fly, it would certainly work. I do make a couple of observations however - and if these ‘faults’ (can’t think of a better word - I mean no offence) bother MTWFF then maybe a change will make him happier.

  1. it seems the hackle is wound from front to back - or is wound counter-clock wise from back to front. Am I correct? (Not a problem either way, just want to know).
  2. it seems there is a rib wound through the hackle AND it trapped some of the hackle. If this is correct, I suggest wiggling the rib a little from side to side as you wrap it forward so that it goes between the hackle fibres and traps few. A follow-up is to then take your bodkin and release any trapped fibres.

Hackle pointing forward does make more movement IMO, which is a good thing. Only a few strands of the tail are too long IMO (pinch them to the correct length, don’t cut them), but after a couple of fish the tail will be perfect anway.

I look forward to knowing why MTWFF is not happy.

Wayne,
I have another observation, but not so germane as Greg’s. I think that people are generally less concerned when someone like you or me post that we aren’t happy than when somebody like, oh, say a Swamp Witch says that she’s not happy.
