Well,
Grandma & Grandpa are looking to get a laptop for Son Ben’s Children. We do NOT want a netbook, but want to stay as close to $300.00 as possible. I guess I missed a $299.00 deal on a Toshiba at Best Buy today. They sold out before I could jump on it…and I checked statewide & western PA!
If you know of anything, please let me know.
I don’t really expect to uncover anything, but thought it may be worth a try.
Thanks,
Mike
Check out Micro Center. They have good prices and will sometimes have refurbs. I like refurbs because you get a machine you know has been personally looked at and checked out as well as a full factory warranty.
They have great prices regardless of which way you go.
Funny thing I was looking for the same thing last weekend. I wanted a new Laptop for my sister who is pretty much home bound now. Like you I missed all the really good sales and even though I really like mine a net book is just too small a screen for her.
I ended up breaking down and getting a Compaq 3gig RAM, 2.0 Mhz system with 250 gig hard drive for $400 at Staples. Looks like a pretty good system that will fit her needs well.
Mike
Believe it or not watch for the Toshiba’s at Walmart. I bought mine less than a year ago and it was $498. My nephew had me go with him to look as he’s going to Afganistan and I found him a Toshiba Satallite with 3 gig ram, 350 gig hard drive, and luckily it had Vista on it, and he only paid $475 for his.
The deals on the one at Best Buy are IN STORE only!!! I went to get my son one just in case he heads to the sandbox but they were out.
I got rid of all the trial crap, and downloaded AVG and malwarebytes so he’s protected.

Micro Center has a laptop for 299.99 today. Think it’s an Acer.
Bought an ACER at Radio Shack for $349.
4 gig memory
360 gig hard drive
15" screen
DVD
and the usual stuff
Has Windows Vista though, not Win7.
GREAT DEAL!
Had a few ACERs and have yet to have the first problem. I’m typing on a 6 year old ACER ‘desk top replacement’ right now. The best computer I have ever had!!
Dells on the other hand…everyone ran out of memory
Most of those are NETbooks (not NOTEbooks)and are very small. Don’t have a C/D drive.
Watch Dell. They will have decent deals from time-to-time. About 2 weeks ago I bought a good laptop for $319.
Looks like Circuit city has some really good machines:

I would also ceck Wal-Mart and their web site or perhaps Sam’s Club too Mike. Sorry but I don’t have the components to build you one. Acer and HP would be my choice.
Microcenter Acer $299. They have a couple models. I bought two of the Acer 2gb/160hard drive models last year as Christmas gifts for my mom&sister and they love them. Great deal for $299
They also have a Acer Aspire which I am going to pick up tonight for my Nephew. Its a 3GB 250harddrive with a better processor and better video card for $449 and comes with Win 7 on it. I know thats a bit more costly but for $49 its actually a really good deal for the quality of parts and operating system thats in it.

didnt circuit city go belly up?? or are they back in business

Norm…that link says “Under new ownership” and it looks like it is only a .com store
They are owned by Systemax/Tigerdirect now and as of this time they are only a .com store. I have had really good luck with Tigerdirect.
They own the name, trade mark and other assets of Circuit City. The other day I noticed that the old CC store on the Jonestown Road in Harrisburg is being remodeled.

As one who loves to tinker with electronics it would be so cool to be able to got to a store for a hands on of Tigerdirect/Systemax stuff! The only thing that would be better is if Newegg also opened some stores.
Just what I need, more places to spend money!
Well, thanks to a couple of you on here, I just purchased an eMachines (owned by Acer) laptop from Micro Center for $299. They also had the Acer at the same price/same makeup except the Acer had Windows Vista & the eMachine had Windows 7 Home Premium…I called my “computer pro” nephew & he advised going with the Windows 7. I’m happy…my Son’s kids get a laptop & I get a very good deal.
Thanks all for your help…FAOL to the rescue AGAIN!
Mike
I had quite the opposite impression of Tiger Direct. Had HORRIBLE service from them. Poor attitudes. Pain in the butt to deal with. Took forever to get a person on the phone.
I’m so sorry … that’s funny! Sad, but funny. Sounds like 99.9% of the companies I’ve tried dealing with … from AT&T right on down the list!!
If it’s a human you want to talk to, call Hook and Hackle!! You’ll get great service, some laughter, and a nifty rod to build!!
That is so true about H&H.
Does Ron carry computers now?
No, but unlike computer salespeople, I can understand what Ron says!!
Try this when you get stuck with the automatic menu and want to get a human on the phone http://gethuman.com/
