Not a bad day

Since today is the first day of school vacation, I decided to meet a friend and do some fishing. He had a spinning rod and I had a fly rod. But there was a problem; I had no leaders. So I found this old broken in half scooby doo spincasting reel, with old, 2 pound test green mono in it. So i took out some and that was my leader for the day.

The pond we go to is a small cemetary pond stocked with large koi. That is what I was after. Everyone who knows me knows that those koi are to me what Moby Dick was to captain Ahab. I have been trying unsucessful at these things for half a year with every sort of set-up you can imagine. Ya ya, “carp are trash fish” but i gaurentee no one would think that after a trip to the cemeraty.

I think they might have been on the cusp of a spawn, or at least I say to as an excuse for them not taking any interest in any fly I tied on. O well, lets catch some good ol 'gills

We threw in some bread, and got out the fly rods. 2 hours later, 80 bluegill between us. I was thinking how I wished there were different types of fish in here. So my friend leaves and I get to working an olive wooly bugger.

I hook something. But you know how bluegill go sideways in the water when they fight, well this didnt feel like a bluegill. I reeled it in and was shocked to find that it was a bass. I have fished there,as I mentioned, for more than half a year and have never seen nor caught a bass. Why would there be bass in there? THere is no way the state would stalk it. NO ONE besides me EVER fished there.

So my personal totals from the day: 40 bluegill, and 5 largemouth bass.

Here is a picture of the koi. It is VERY exciting to stalk koi.

And there were all sorts of hatches going on, the bluegill were going CRAZY over these bugs. All in all, just about every species of fish behaved strangly today

Pilgrim…I have a small pond on my farm, in the front yard…Koi (very large gold fish) swim about. I bought 7 fingerlings (3 inches) three years ago…I now have about 100 little siblings swimning around. Come to my S.E. Michigan U-Fish Koi pond. For you it is free. Better yet, we can go a 1000 yards down to the river and fly cast for some “Real” fish. Nice photo’s, good story. Jonezee

This is kind of an odd question, but how much do the koi cost?

And they are real fish they are no different than the common carp you find in any stream or lake. Same species, differen color. Just like people

There are some gigantic koi in a pond in Tempe. I hit on one last week. It jus’ didnt’ happen after about 10 minutes of fighting on 4lb leader. Gotta make more of that fly…
Good luck on those.

There is a fine line between fly fishing and standing in a river waving a stick, and YOU SIR have crossed that line!
