Norm's Nest Egg PT SBS

A very sacred thing, the Nest Egg.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #18
thread - MFC 8/0 brown
rib - x-small copper wire
abdomen - pheasant tail
nest - peacock herl
egg - mercury bead

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, tie in wire (leave tag end long), wrap down bend

tie in some pheasant tail fibers; wrap to point above point

counterwrap rib; helicopter end, cover with thread

tie in peacock herl; twist around thread, take a few wraps

Part 2

slide bead onto wire, nestle into place; tie off wire

take a few more wraps of peacock

tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

I hoped I’ve explained it well enough; wouldn’t want you to end up flat broke on top of Hoover Dam.

Scott

Always good to have a nest egg! We tie a midge like that for the San Juan - will see if the fishies like it in a bigger size.

Excellent again, Scott. Do you think the bead would be more effective than a little ball of pearl Ice Dub or a flashback covered with UV resin like the Copper John?

Joe

Joe,

Don’t know if it’s more effective, but it is more egg-like

Well said!

Joe

Scott,

Thanks for providing all of these SBS’s. This is a great looking fly, so I could not resist tying a few of them. On my first one, I had a heck of a time getting the bead on the end of the wire. Dropped a couple of them, which I presume will eventually be found when cleaning the floor. :frowning:
I keep copper wire on a bobbin, so I figured on the second fly I would just thread the bead on the wire before tying the wire in. This was MUCH easier for me. Don’t know if you have tried it this way, but this is the way I will always do it from now on.

Ted

Ted,

I don’t keep my wire on a bobbin but that’s a great idea; it would certainly help keep my bead supply from depleating so quickly.

Scott
