Yep, that’s the plan. I’m/we’re on a vacation in California and have absolutely NO intention of fishing or golf. Just riding up and down US 1 from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and taking it all in will do me just fine I’m sure. Can any of y’all go on vacation and NOT fish?? or is it just I who can break call of the fly?? I can spend a full day alone on the Marin Highlands overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge , visiting the Muir Woods Redwood Grove or taking in the Bixby Bridge and not even think of fishing. . I’m only thinking of fish in a culinary sense and what wine would go well with the selection. I know the feeling will pass but for now “Kalifornia here I come”.
Have you ever intentionally gone on a vacation without your “stuff”?
On our last family holiday which was nearly a month spent in Tasmania with my wife and 2 children I took all my gear in the hope that I would be able to get away for a couple of hours one day and get to do some fishing. But allas (sp) it was not mean’t to be. I will never expect to go fishing when on vacation with the family again, it does get dishearting when so close to such good water and it does not eventuate. The good side is, my gear is well travelled.
Ahhh; the delicate balancing act of marriage that enables me to go fishing well over 150 times a year including quite a few 3-4-5-6 day excursions with the boys.
The wife really doesn’t fish except those rare occasions when we drown some worms together. I personally like it this way; I do like my space on occasion and all of the “manly” things I can do when fishing alone or with the boys.
That being said; I NEVER go fishing or bring my stuff when we go on vacation. That’s OUR time together to do what SHE wants.
I’m another who can leave the gear at home for the family vacation. That being said, if any of the Grandkids are along, they expect & want Grandpa to do something outdoors related with them, whether it be fishing, crabbing, or just wildlife watching.

Went on many of those vacations when the children were growing up but made up for it in retirement. One with the wife for 8 weeks thru the west and Alberta. Half way thru I told her I was tired of fishing, but guess what—I had to fish all the way back to Indiana. Now my children and grandkids are flyfishers. My daughter and grandson just sent me pictures from Kodiak Alaska with a string of 40 plus lb Halibut. Thought of disowning them for bottom fishing with big weights. BILL

Not think about fishing!!! What is that? If I stop thinking about fishing it feels like there is a black hole inside…
All of our vacations are planned around fishing. Then again we all fish…
I’m another who can go on vacation and not fish, but there is no way I can go anywhere without wondering, “HHMMM, I wonder if there are fish in there…” I can go without fishing, but there better be something else to do to keep my mind off it. I’ve gone on more trips without fishing than I have gone on and fished, but most of them were climbing trips so I didn’t have the room, time or desire to fish. Have a GREAT trip, I’m sure you’ll enjoy every minute of it!
No way! There is no way you can drive down Hwy 1 and see all that surf and not want to fish. The urge is gonna kill you. Not only that, but to drive by all those golf courses (the Olympic Club, Sharp Park, Half Moon Bay, Pebble Beach!) and not have the urge to swing a club - no way! This is my neck of the woods born and raised and I can tell you that the urge is as stronger as the call of nature and you will go. So be sure to have your rod and clubs in the trunk.
Hey TyroneFly,
As a matter of fact, we flew into SJC, bought another camera at Fry’s( can ya believe I forgot one at home?) and proceeded South to Carmel. We drove the miles to Bixby Bridge, took 100 more pictures along the way. Watched the azure and white surf pound the shore, drove by Pebble Beach and Spyglass and I assure you that golf nor fishing even entered my mind. I/we DO go on fishing vacations, usually to Wyoming but this one is a “take in the beauty” and let the fish and greens rest vacation.
Sure, its not a problem… when I go skiing in the winter. In warm months when I vacation its always on the water somewhere. I am more likely to take a set up and not use it than I am to not take a setup along. Never can tell when the opportunity might arise.
Hell, I took a couple of fishing rods last time I deployed – fishing off the fantail of a navy LPH! Brought in some dolphin fish (mahi-mahi) for the mess decks!
To further clarify my intent in this case. I had NO intentions of fishing when I planned this trip. Knowing full well that there would be opportunities to fish I opted to not take advantage of them THIS time. A few weeks ago I posted a question: Are you a fly fisherman or do you fly fish. My resolve NOT to fish probably puts me in my catagory of “I fly fish” for surely a “fly fisherman” would NEVER leave home without his “stuff”.
Hey there MFTG,
The “sideways in the twisties” is not advisable here along CA 1. Tempting but NOT advisable. We let-er-rip for a few stretches but the scenery slowed us down considerable like. Jade Beach or Big Sur are not to be passed with scarf ablowin.
