Zac and i met at sedgwick county park to fish the creek. tis the first time we’d put an eyeball on each other for a few years. he’s so young he hasn’t changed. i’ve been thru so much i’ve changed a lot. anyway we fished most of the morning from 7:30 on. caught numerous gills and green sunfish, all small maybe 5" for the largest gill. zac managed a crappie that was the biggest. first time for me fly fishing for several yeas and i held up much better than i expected to. got more exercise than i’d had in about 6 months and my shoulder is a bit sore. the great thing is i’m really relaxed like at peace within myself. zac was magnanimous! he showed many many good spots to fish along the creek, pretty much showed me the entire thing. i got my fish with 2 flies both soft hackle with peacock. one is a modified prince nymph, pheasant tail fiber tail, peacock hurl body, fine gold wire ribbing, fine white rubber leg wing and jungle cock hackle. the other is nymph in the finest trout tradition, pheasant tail fiber tail, chartreuse dubbing under body (very thin) larva lace over body, fine copper wire ribbing, peacock hurl thorax, jungle cock hackle. those free-kin fish didn’t like bead heads at all today. i’ll get pix up of the flies as soon as i tie a few more. the fish chewed them up pretty bad, hackles ripped, rugger legs gone, peacock hurl bodies blasted.
Nice report. Thanks for sharing. Those smallish sunfish, when the bite is on, are sooooo much fun to catch. I miss the local reservoir where I used to live that held a massive population of green sunfish along with trophy sized brown trout. Gee, I wonder how those trout grew to trophy size? Hmmm, .
It was a lot of fun, Wes! We’ll do it again some time soon, and maybe we’ll be joined by some more local guys next trip. I just wish we had really gotten into 'em! When we get a GOOD rain that flushes that thing out, it will be better.
Wes, I’m telling you… That prince you were fishing yesterday is baaaad news for bluegills! I just need to pick up some fine rubber leg material next trip to town. Great ties.
Wes, I like the flies, nicely done, and I didn’t know that the jungle cock hackle looked that good. Nice hackle.
Those bluegills are a rough crowd, really beat up on flies if they get a chance. I have been around some that really seem to have an attitude, but not lately. I am ready to get out and have a go at some bluegills, but the gills have not cooperated.
Wes I’m glad you enjoyed your outing so much. Getting out the first trip is the key, just get out there and the rest will fall into place. I’v done things this year I didn’t think I would ever do, been some nice places and caught some nice fish too. One place I’v been was up in Ohio with Mr. Tuber, caught some nice gills myself up there. Thank you guys for sharing your trip with us…
