Newbie Question

Hello all,

I have what I percieve to be somewhat of a “beginner” question for all of you. Assuming that you tie leaders to fly lines using a nail not (or any non-loop knot for that matter), do you clip the section of fly line off that the knot is tied to in order to get the old leader off when replacing with a new leader? If so, are there any concerns with eventually whittling away the first foot or two of your fly line?

Thanks and gig’em (in case there are any Fightin’ Texas Aggies out there)

I always tell the Lady of the House that we shouldn’t “assume” 'cause we don’t know what the other person is really thinking. That said, I “assume” that JC means Nope to concerns of whittling away the fly line. Not Nope to cliping the knot of fly line and leader. (JC, if I “assumed” wrong, here’s my hand to slap)

Thanks Silvertop, that is my assumption as well.

Go over to the knots section and see how JC ties his leaders to his fly line.

Nail knot about a foot or so of leader butt material to the fly line. Then attach your leader to that. That way you don’t have to tie a nail knot every time you change leaders. Eventually you have to tie on a new butt section of course.
