I happened to meet two members of your your group in Tulahoma TN this past weekend. Being a feeble nearly blind old man I failed to remember thier names, but they were very nice and gave me this URL. after talking for a while I found out there are trout here in the south! I have tryed to fly fish in the past for bream but can’t seem to cast very well. don’t mind me lurking the Chat room to learn a little before Opening my big mouth. I also have some questions conserning an old split bamboo fly rod that belonged to my Great Grand father. I’ll dig it out of storage and send a Photo for help in Identifying it if possible. I wish to thank you both for the nice talk and remind me who you are, please.
Welcome, glad you found this place. For the most part we’re harmless. Be nice in here, you have picked a famous name to use. Somehow I already think you will be. The famous name? Oh, he was my dad.
Dont worry about being able to cast, if you can even just get the line in the water for now you will figure out the rest as you go. I started in april bought a rod, reel, ect… and a 5 dollar dvd on flyfishing from cabelas discount rack watched it a few times then went out and well lets just say I am a bit hooked (pun intended). Well I still need alot of work in my technique but I am catching fish and having a blast, meeting new people and seeing new places. Like I said dont worry about your skill level or lack there of just get out and have some fun someone will show you after you splash the water enough times.
I have had complete stangers come up to me and offer help got some flys out of it too ones they said would work that of course I did not have.
Good luck

Welcome Pop…glad you’re here.
Pop,
Was this meeting at the Executive Inn Motel? If it was, you met “ohiotuber” (Mike Flanagan) and Jack Hise. I think I drove up while you were talking to them. I was in the white Mazda B3000. I live here and they were visiting me and I was taking them fishing on the Duck River. I think you had your grandson with you. Welcome to FAOL and you are really going to enjoy this site. Be sure to surf the archives here and you will be amazed of how much information is here to assist you with this addiction.
Warren
Hey Pop, we might just be cousins, or sumpin’…all my relatives are in Pulaski, Lawrenceburg, Leoma and Possum Trot.
Welcome Pop! I type pretty slow myself so welcome to the site. Nice bunch of people on here and everyone is glad to help. You might end up fishing with a few. Not just trout on here. All kinds of fly fishing. Search back through the past articles and don’t hesitate to ask questions…we’ve all had one problem or another with something. Nobody I know of yet was born with a rod in his hand…well okay, maybe Castwell.
Hey Pop,
Just want to add my welcome to the
others. Glad to have you aboard. I promise
you few of us come here knowing it all, but
over time we tend to learn from our friends
here what we need to achieve our fly fishing
goals. Welcome to the madness. Warm regards, Jim
Thank you for the warm welcome. I just hope I can live up to the name. My grand father was a Pop and now I am to my grand children. I have been renewed in trying the fly rod again. I’ll get mine out and try a few farm ponds around here to start.
Need any flies, let us know. Some of us might have one or two to send your way. Meanwhile, welcome to a gentle madness. JGW
Welcome Pop. My three sons call me Pop. I like it. Your Great grandpas rod most likely can be identified here. There are some pretty savy people here when it comes to old bamboo. Pull up a chair and stay a spell. We’ll check back with you later. Jonezee
I learn more about the world while talking to myself when fishing alone
Hi Pop,
Yep! WarrenP is right…that was UJack Hise & me who you were talking to. You make/play Dulcimers, right? Glad to see your post & welcome aboard! Great bunch of people here.
Mike

Pop,
Welcome aboard! I am glad you decided to pick up the fly rod again. You picked the right spot and got to meet three of the greatest guys God put on earth.
When I saw you are from Alabama I immediately thought of my time at Ft. Rucker repairing and flying those things that fling their wings. Great folks in a great state! I do miss Alabama.

Welcome aboard Pop! You’ve stumbled upon one of the greatest resources there is for learning this whole fly fishing thing. Just a couple suggestions:
- Ask as many questions as you can think of
- Go fishing as often as humanly possible
As far as the bamboo rod goes, there are plenty of us bamboo nuts here (dleo, , splinter, JC, etc…) who’d be happy to help you with identifying, restoring, and (hopefully) fishing with it. There’s even a bamboo chat on Thursday nights from 6-8(PST) hosted by Ron Kusse (he’s a VERY experienced bamboo rod builder). You’ve definitely come to the right place!
Regards,
Joe Martin

think catching fish no matter the type is important at first.
fly rod is NOT spinning rod…
Best advice is to SLOW down.
Remember your roots and never lose track of why you are out there.

Welcome Pop,
1st Let me pass you the newbie hat and let you know that these Gals and Guys are the one’s with all the answers.
They have walked me through an old rod, old reel and no experience. Tomorrow I will hopefully cast my first fly line! I hope you will join the fun!
Oh Yeah! How come he didn’t get the speach about the Coffee, Donuts and wiping the feet?
Anyway, as one newbie to another…NO question is too dumb to ask…and the information on this site is a treasure!
Enjoy and welcome!
